Show Veterans Memorial, Armory Discussed at Legion Meeting The possibility of a Veterans Memorial and Armory for Pleasant Grove was discussed at the American Ameri-can Legion Post 70 meeting held in the city hall last Thursday night, under the direction of Commander Com-mander Don Mack Dalbon. Meeting jointly with the Legion-aires Legion-aires for the opening and closing ceiremonies, were 'the ladies of Unit 70 Auxiliary, in charge of President Presi-dent Sadie Beck. A pot luck supper sup-per was sesved prior to the formal separate meetings. At the Legionaires session Mayor Burton H. Adams reported that there is appromimately $18,000 available to the Veterans of the Lindon, Pleasant Grove and Manila Man-ila area for the construction of a Veterans Memorial. This money is in the Utah County Treasury. Colonel William M. Alleman of Springville ,an offioer of the Utah National Guard explained the procedure pro-cedure necessary in securing a national guard armory here. He said that first, a N.G. unit would need be aotivated locally and en-listemnts en-listemnts secured totaling .50 men. Then an aplication for an armory could be filed with the Utah Adjutant Ad-jutant General. Mayor Adams also read a letter let-ter from Major Robert McCaleb, Commander of the Provo area, U. S. Army Reserve Corps. Major McCaleb Mc-Caleb said that if the Pleasant Grove Dump Truck Reserve Unit could be redesignated so the enlisted en-listed stemgth could be raised from the n-resent 50 to 100 men. then a U. S. Army Training Center could be built here. He concluded his letter by stating, stat-ing, ,,"As the overall budget will permit, it is expected that the Pleasant Grove unit will be redesignated re-designated to authorize greater strength and subsequently qualify for a Training Center. ( "You may rest assured, that it is the desire of the UJ3. Army Reserve Re-serve to construct Training Centers as rapidly as conditions will permit, per-mit, in all areas that can support them." At the Auxiliary separate session, ses-sion, Mrs. Belle Hyatt, represent-ting represent-ting the Utah Civil Defense Council Coun-cil was the guest speaker. Her message centered about the slogan "Be alert today in order to .be alive tomorrow." During the preliminary program Glen Newman, George Curtis West, Duane Adamson and Vrgil Turner were Installed as new Post 70 members. Special guests were Mr. and Mrs. Junius A. West, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Rasmussen and Mr. and Mrs. George G. Smith. |
