Show Rescue Buried Coal Miner After 3 Days of Digging SELLECK, Wash. For the second sec-ond time in 18 years, John Walti has been rescued after a mine disaster. dis-aster. He was saved recently when rescue crews found him 400 feet underground where he had been a prisoner for 54 hours. He was weak, pain wracked from a crushed right arm and near a state of shock when he was brought to the surface of the Big Four coal mine. In his latest accident, Waltl was caught in an avalanche of rock and timbers when the mine roof gave way. Several other miners escaped and they were sure that Walti had been swept to his death by the slide But a huge 12 by 12 timber pinned him down in such a manner that it and others held off the debris. He was able to breathe and he remained conscious. "It got cold. Then it got colder, ' he recalled after his arrival at a hospital near Selleck. "A long time went by. A hell of a long time. Then I heard some noise. I whistled. I yelled as best I could. I don't know whether they heard me. "Then I kind of gave up. I didn't think I could make it. I passed out. Then I came to and heard more noise. I yelled and talked to them They heard me this time." |
