Show jjBarHe Creek j;j Breeze jj BY K. B. 1 At the close of World War II a light tank cost the government $27,000; now the price is $225,000. This is an increase of over 800 per cent. Other items of military e-quipment e-quipment show a similar increase. It is the same old story over again. While the young manhood of this country is suffering death or worse, another group of our citizens are becoming fabulously rich by gouging the government at every opportunity. President Truman has said that the present conflict is necessary to preserve our democracy. If this be true, then every American should bear an equal burden in its conduct. If we confiscate human life, then we should confiscate money, pro. perty, labor, material, or whatever what-ever is necessary for the war's successful culmination. Why not, in the advent of war, rqeuire everyone to work for the same wage? Why not require industry to produce on a strictly cost basis? Why not take whatever we need of material or resources for the bare cost of production? If war is a fundamental responsibility respon-sibility of all, then all should share equally the hardships and sacrifices that go with it. One of the surest ways to end the present war and to prevent future wars, is to take the profit out of it. If those who make the wars were compelled to do the fighting or even work for a private's pay, then wars would be no more. |
