In addition approximately ap-proximately 300,000 lives were lost in rural fires. "Statistics show that four farm fires were burning every hour of every day in this country last year," he adds. As measures to prevent farm fires this year, Professor Floyd suggests building a fire proof ash pit for burning of rubbish, and constructing fireguards around farm buildings and around wood-lots wood-lots and windbreaks. Another suggestion is to clean the roofs of all buildings and free them of inflammable litter. Also chimneys should be inspected, inspect-ed, and attics cleaned out. Professor Floyd recommends repairing fire fighting equipment and getting it in working condition condi-tion now before the dry season. Shovels, hoes, rakes and water buckets should be available and ready for use on a moment's notice. The extension forester stresses that fire prevention and precautions precau-tions are especially important this year since we need all the food and fiber we can produce and since there is a shortage of manpower to fight fires. |
