Show New Food Boss Urges Output Due to war pressure, the outlook for ships with which to move offshore off-shore sugar supplies has grown alarming. Added to this is the threatened reduction of more than 700,000 tons in our domestic sugar. Mr. Scalley, vice president and general manager of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company says that this situation sit-uation no doubt actuated Food Administrator Davis to urge state war boards to try to bring sugar beet production up to the established estab-lished quotas. The following is a copy of his telegram to Orville Lee, state chairman o'f the U S D A war board: "The marked reduction in farmers' farm-ers' intention to plant sugar beets i'f acrried out would result in less sugar than we need to produce in this country. In view of the difficulty diffi-culty of diverting boats "needed for critical war uses to sugar, it is of the utmost importance that you give all possible assistance to growers grow-ers in meeting sugar beet goals. Notify all sugar beet counties and see that adequate publicity is given to this need. The department is giving labor, machinery and marketing mar-keting problems of the industry urgent attention." Signed: Chester Davis. March 31, 1943. |
