Show 'Conference Speakers Stress Church Welfare Program Spiritual and material benefits to be derived from support of the Church Welfare plan were stressed by Apostle Reed Smoot and Henry D. Moyle, of the general Welfare committee, at sessions of the Alpine Al-pine stake quarterly conference Saturday and Sunday. A priesthood and welfare . meeting meet-ing Saturday night, general sessions ses-sions Sunday morning and afternoon, after-noon, and a meeting under direction direc-tion of the stake Mutual Improvement Improve-ment association Sunday night marked the conference. President Clifford E. Young presided over three of the sessions, and Clarence A. Grant, superintendent of the stake M. I. A., took charge of the Sunday evening session. Speaking at the priesthood and welfare session, Henry D. Moyle pointed out that, in view of the uncertainty, of the times, church members must conserve their resources, re-sources, gather together their surpluses sur-pluses and prepare for the future. The Welfare program, he said, is a program of education, aimed at reducing waste. As a foundation for this program, pro-gram, one must look to the individual, indi-vidual, since every one must work out his individual salvation, he declared. de-clared. Continuing, he stressed the importance im-portance of fasting and paying fast offerings. Referring to the transition transi-tion which the working of the welfare wel-fare plan is bringing, he pointed out that the priesthood is teaching church members not only to take care of themselves, but also to take care of their fellow members. Urging all priesthood quorums to participate actively in the Welfare work, he recommended that regular Welfare meetings be held in the stake and wards, suggesting tha1, these meetings should be held weekly. This meeting was opened with congregational singing of "We Thank Thee O God For a Prophet," followed by prayer by Leonard S. Harrington. Vivian Green played a 'cello solo. President Young welcomed those attending, and announced the theme of the conference, welfare work. He urged that the priesthood respond re-spond when called upon to work en the project farm in American Fork. The meeting was closed with singing of "Now Let Us Rejoice," and benediction by Orval C. Mercer. Mer-cer. In welcoming the gathering at the Sunday morning session, President Presi-dent Young expressed the hope that those attending might be blessed and encouraged in their duties during dur-ing conference. Although the priesthood priest-hood quorums are not as active as desired, an effort is being put forth with them, he said. The auxiliaries auxil-iaries are well officered and doing a good work. Referring to the Welfare plan, he pointed out that it has tremendous tremen-dous posssibilities, although the quorums have not as yet aroused themselves to their responsibilities in the work. He expressed the hope that the stake would exceed the $1 per capita in fast offerings during the present year. Bishop Joseph H. Storrs, in reporting re-porting on the progress of the welfare wel-fare plan, said that the Alpine and Highland wards had been assigned wheat as their projects, and that the American Fork wards were raising the other commodities assigned as-signed to the stake. He announced that plans are under way to start the stake cannery for the third year's run, in the near future. President Maud D. Christensen of the stake Relief society spoke on the work being done by that organization organ-ization to assist in the Welfare plan. She said that the Relief society women had made 92 quilts, and reported re-ported that an effort is being made to help people to help themselves. A report of the work being done by the stake Primary association was given by the president. Leah Bush Greene. She expressed the conviction that the Primary work among the children is very important. import-ant. Henry D .Moyle, in his address, emphasized the importance of the work being done by the boys m the lesser priesthood quorums. He pointed out that a spirit of brotherhood brother-hood and fellowship should be established in the quorums, and explained how, through this brotherhood brother-hood and unity, the members can o |
