Plants develop from seeds by processes not unlike those that produce chickens chick-ens from eggs in the poultry kingdom. king-dom. The germ of life is in the fertile seed. Moreover, the individual individ-ual seed bears only the plant from which it is derived. A zinnia seed flowers into a zinnia. Just as the egg from which the chicken hatches holds food for the developing develop-ing chick, so the seed contains food of a certain kind sufficient to nourish the plant embryo until it has leaves and roots of its own. |
