Show growth and development of our city. May the New Year bring happiness to all and may we as citizens work for a bigger and better American Fork In 1930. In closing let me again express a sincere appreciation of the many things that has been done to make the past year's work a success. o Special Accomplishments of City During Past Year J As we approach, the close of this year's activities in our muni- ! eipal work, 1 am again -iven an opportunity thru the columns of the Chilli to express in behalf of. the city administration, their appreciation appreci-ation for the support that has been -ivcu the city officials in the execution of their duties. The de-rce of sum's that has been attained at-tained has in a measure been dependent upon the co-operation of the people of this community. We are interested first of all in the promotion of those thin which will stimulate the growth and development of our community. The problems which confront ns are the problems of growth and progress. As city officials, we must recognize the fact that we arc obligated to support all public welfare measure able report on the same can be made. In the various departments of the city, the same type of work and general gene-ral success that was present in 1928 has been continued thru out the past year, The efficiency of our police department, the improved condition and appearance of our city cemetery, the improvement of our city streets, the splendid work of the fire department depart-ment and their community Christmas tree and the recreation and amusement amuse-ment that has been provided by the band and the baseball team are examples ex-amples of the success that has been present. In the "Waterworks department, a 115000.00 meter program has been completed and every water user receives re-ceives water only thru a meter. Many blocks of wood pipe has been replaced replac-ed with cast iron pipe and the pipe replacement program is well under way. Increased precautions have also al-so been taken to make our culinary watter supply sanitary. In a financial way, the present administration ad-ministration has continued the work of the past few administrations and as a result of carefully watching expenditures ex-penditures and adhering closely to allowances they have not only lived within the 1929 Budget, but will have an unexpended balance leaving the city in the same excellent condition financially with but a total outstanding outstand-ing bonded indebtedness of $10,000.00 and $7000.00 available money in the sinking fund toward payment in 1931. The commendable way in which the Library Board and librarian have cared for our public Library and the needs of citizens and school children has been a sourer of satisfaction. The splendid work that the Farm City officials are constantly receiving re-ceiving petitions and requests for appropriations ap-propriations in better roads, increas1-ed increas1-ed culinary water supply, more efficient effic-ient police and fire department supplies sup-plies and many other desireable projects. pro-jects. There is no question as to the need of such things, yet to accomplish accomp-lish all these, a decided raise in the tax levy would be necessary. Such a change upward, however would not only be unfair to the tax payer but add to the present burden of taxation. It is therefore necessary neces-sary to decide whfch of all these desireable de-sireable things is the most essential, which will do most to take care of our everyday public needs. It has been said that "no city is bigger or better than its culinary water supply". The paramount need of our city is an abundant permanent can take place, changes in our present pres-ent water system must be made. "With this thot in view, the city early in the present year, filed on five second feet of water at the mouth of American Fork canyon and three second feet at the Cave Camp springs. Realizing that to appropriate this water, the oity nyist furnish to the irrigation water users a like amount of water, an application for 1000 acre feet of water fn the proposed Deer Creek Reservoir project was made. When action on this was deferred, de-ferred, the city immediately met with I the American Fork Irrigation Co., the ' out come of which was a signed agreement in which the Irrigation Co. agreed to exchange with American Fork Oity water in American Fork canyon for a like amount that might culinary water supply. Probably the outstanding work of the present administration ad-ministration for the past year has been their efforts to secure and guarantee guar-antee for American Fork,, an abundant abund-ant and permanent supply of culinary water. We have within a few miles of our city, water as pure as can be secured any place in the state and yet nothing has been done prior to this year to hold a portion of this for our future needs. It is true that at present there is an ample supply of city water for all purposes but before any great amount of growth and development be obtained elsewhere. After April, 1931, American Fork City will be entirely out of debt and in excellent condition to finance the building of a new water system. Another worthy undertaking of the city officials has been their co-operation with the Lions Club in an effort to have established in our locality, lo-cality, the proposed Utah State Training Train-ing School. Every possible thing that could be done to consumate this possibility has been done. While the Site Finding commissions has not taken definite action, we are hopeful that in the very near future a favor- Bureau, in their weed eradication projects have sponsored and the $ if- efforts of the city beautification pro- j gram is gradually becoming notice- t able on every hand. Surely those who see the change that has taken place in the past few years cannot . help but feel that such efforts have not been wasted. To the poultry producers, the jj Lions Club and all who worked so i diligently to make our Poultry Day J celebration the success that it has be- j come and to those who have made j possible the wonderful lighted com- j munity sign board at the west en- 5 trance to our city, we extend our ap- j preciation. Let us continue to make Poultry Day one of the biggest cele- j brations of the year and to further those things that will add to the 1 |
