Or the physician can insert a sigmoidoscope through the rectum to the colon and intestines, provid-ing for diagnostic capabilities and opens channels for the removal of tissue biopsies and polyps, and the cauterizing of internal bleeding. The endoscope tube is guided through the intestine by remote control. Before endoscopy, it was noted, the same procedures often re-quired' major surgery, cutting, and a hospital stay of several days. The new procedure, however, is non-vasiv- e and allows a patient to be in and out of the Same Day Surgery in an hour with little if any discomfort. Patient and case information is recorded right along with the video images and the computer system can match video images with corre-sponding hard-cop- y endoscopy reports and patient data. American Fork Hospital has invested about $30,000 in the new machine. Hospital officials noted physi-cians at the hospital utilize endo-scopy for the benefit of 500 patients each year. They said because the life of one Utahn is lost every 53 hours due to colorectal cancer the second leading cancer killer in the United States the American Cancer Society recommends yearly digital rectal exams for persons over the age of 40 to help assure early detec-tion of the disease. Early detection of colorectal cancer polyps, however, results in the successful treatment of 75 per-cent of all colorectal cancer cases. Jay Byrd to take bath It's not often you get a chance to dunk a gubernatorial candidate. But that's the chance north Utah County residents will have Friday, July 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Sounds Easy Video, 2 18 West State Road (Timp Plaza). Of course, Jay Byrd is not the most widely-recognize- d candidate for Utah's top state office. Even Gov. Bangerter leads Byrd in the polls. But as a write-i- n candidate for the Rubber Chicken Party, Byrd hopes to bring attention to some of the issues in the campaign. Byrd is a well-know- n disk jockey for country western radio station KKAT out of Salt Lake City who is known for telling his listeners to "take a hike." Saturday, with the proceeds going to muscular dystrophy re-search, anyone with good aim can tell Byrd to "take a bath." Byrd said he will man the dunk-ing booth for four or five hours. Tickets to take a crack at dunking Byrd will cost two for $1. Other activities planned by Sounds Easy will be clowns and free balloons. Hot dogs, Pepsi, Pony Express pizza by the slice, Baskin Robbins ice cream cones will all be offered at 50 cents, with all pro-ceeds going to muscular dystrophy. Byrd said he also hopes to pick up some votes for his write-i- n campaign. As a write-i- n candidate, Byrd supports a varied platform from the absurd bird for which his party is named to Utah's infamous pumps. For example, Byrd wants to see the state bird changed from the seagull to the rubber chicken. "That was then, and now is now," says the candidate, explain-ing that a Utah business manufac-tures more rubber chickens that any other business in the United States. And he has an interesting solu-tion to the Great Salt Lake pumps, which he says should not have been built. "Anytime you fool with Mother Nature, you are asking her to slap you hard," Byrd said. But with the pumps in place, Byrd thinks they might make a good tourist attrac-tion. sfa and fip Loveseat rP 3QQC0 ALLRED SLEJEPERZI1 SUPPLY S 00 East State, 785-222- 1 S (valuable coupon N SGPL7 j 1 rPSi a per ga,lon discount I jfy on gas or diesel fuel J I 11 If 1 with this coupon.
