VI " : Principal John Burton talks with students and a teacher following an unusual fire drill at Manila School. iFire drills are no joke for students (at Manila Elementary this year ' By KAI.VN SECRETAX Manila Elementary students knew a fire drill would be held Friday, May 13, at 2 p.m. It was a monthly drill but some began to "'wnder, did something really ; happen? It all looked so real. '1 Two fire trucks and the am--- i bulance arrived on the scene and students declared Ihev saw fellow missing- The firemen entered the building with air units on their back ,' and searched the building. The i "missing" students were trans-ported in the ambulance. ; Two teachers, Mrs. Horrocks and Mrs. Flewallen, were reported missing, along with students Jason ' Derost, Chelsey Peck, Dustin Huntsman and Nick Long. " Principal Burton previously selected the missing students and asked them to report to his office as the fire alarm sounded. Manila School has been part-icipating in a pilot program this (year with a drill each month. The ischedule was prepared with the date and time of each drill, along with various problems such as blocked exits, missing people or smoke. The May 13 drill called for all outside classroom doors blocked and missing people. Other months, smoke was a problem. Other areas were blocked and sometimes people were missing. Carolyn Smith worked with Principal Burton to initiate a national program where fire drills are held each month and used as a teaching opportunity. School maps indicate evacuation area. Teachers were instructed to grab their roll books for an account of students and a teacher is assigned as an area leader to report any missing students or teachers from his cluster. Another map shows the different utility shutoffs, fire extinguishers and where other equipment is. located. This program eliminates the unannounced fire drill. The surprise drill is laid to rest. Instead, a year- - luunu pidii becomes a teaching opportunity which includes primary and secondary exits, designated meeting areas away from the building, a procedure for checking and reporting attendance. A variety of obstacles and problems are foreseen so participants can become accustomed to thinking about their escape route. When the drill is over, an evaluation is held and students and faculty are judged on how well they performed. By announcing drills beforehand, it is possible for everyone to have coats on so they don't have lo shiver outside while waiting lo report missing people and reporting to personnel. Each drill becomes a teaching moment. The students at Manila know what to do in an emergency, they have practiced all year. Some where questioning Principal Burton about the reality during Friday's drill as so many volunteers arrived on the scene.
