JIf you missed it, you are one of few who love basketball in Pleasant Grove that did. Over 350 children and parents descended last Tuesday to meet potentially one of the greats in the game, the Utah Jazz's Karl Malone. Karl came to the Pleasant Grove Community Center in conjunction with the Jr. Jazz program to provide a clinic for all players in 3 Pleasant Grove. He took time with " the kids, working with them, as much as possible on their lay-up- s, I among other things. Children, in-cluding both girls and boys, as young as 8 through seniors in high school, received instruction from "The Mailman." Karl was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz and was the 13th pick overall in 1985. He was nicknamed "The Mailman" by a sportswriter in Louisiana because, "He delivers!" In the 1985-8- 6 season, as a rookie, he averaged 14.9 points per game. He came in third in the balloting for rookie of the year in the NBA, and was second along all rookies as a rebounder. He was the top rookie in steals. He talked at length to the kids about having the discipline to practice, and become a really good basketball player and person. He advised the kids to take good care of themselves, and to 1 isten to their parents and teachers. He took a great interest in the kids and Karl Malone autographs a basketball for waiting youngsters after he presented a clinic in Pleasant Grove last Tuesday night for Jr. Jazi players. worked really well with them. When he finished talking to the kids, he signed autographs for an hour for all of the kids who at tended. He was really good with the kids, and was appreciated by all. Four teams tie for first place in Jr. Jazz league just too powerful this day, as the Lakers were victims of extremely cold shooting in the first, third and fourth quarters. Blitzed by 17 first quarter points, the Laker players showed what they are made of as they fought back to a 13-2- 1 halftime score, only to see the Spirits red-h-in the second half and their own scoring efforts not producing the needed points. Celtics 55 Rockets 15 The entire Celtics team had a hand in scoring as everyone con-tributed to the victory as the Celtics beat the young Rockets by 40 points. The Celtics could do n o wrong this day, while the Rockets (one of the 1986-8- 7 expansion teams) could not do anything right, especially getting the ball to fall through the hoop. Derek Robinson with 10, Shane Smith with 8 and Greg Miles and Darin Ruth with 7 each led the hot shooting Celtics, while Ryan Goulding with 7 again led the Rocket attack and was backed up by Mark Julkenen with 5. However, when the smoke cleared, the front running Spirits, Pacers, KKnicks and Celtics did nothing to lessen their claim as the teams to beat this year. Jazz 25 Cougars 21 The Jazz scored 11 big first quarter points and then settled back to play even ball the rest of the J game. Jake Harmer with ten and Erick Jackliri with 7 led the Jazz, while Troy Harris, Shawn Stevens and Rick Hardman were the big scorers with 6 and 5 points, respectively.
