Show Soccer teams plan parties The Pleasant Grove City Recreation Soccer league finished their league tournament last Saturday bringing an end to the season. This year's league featured 26 teams in four different age divisions. A total of 350 children were able to participate in the soccer program this year. Division 1 (pre-school Kindergarten) The light blue team, with Ron . Olson coaching, finished first in this division. This team was undefeated during the season and defeated the green team, coached by Judy Bulkley, 1-0 in the championship game. This division was the most enjoyable en-joyable to watch as the children were getting their first experience at a competitive sport. JoRae Haynes and Alan Clegg coached the other teams in this division. A special thanks to the coaches of these teams for tjneir patience and help in making this an enjoyable experience for the children. Division 2 (first and second grade) This division was the largest division with 10 teams participating in the league. Several of the tournament tour-nament games were ended with a shoot-out to break a tie at the end of regulation time. The green team, coached by Rico Marsigli, went undefeateed to win the championship of this division. , They beat a tough light blue team 1-0 1-0 in the championship game. Larry Fugal was the coach of the light blue team. Lynn Mortensen's maroon team defeated Rue Nielson's purple team 1-0 in the consolation game. Other coaches in this division were glen Sykes, Clyde Fames, Kurt Johansson, Shirley Grey, Brent Jensen, Linda Grange, and David Jensen. These coaches did an outstanding job and are appreciated ap-preciated by the Recreation Department for their efforts. Division 3 (third and fourth grade) The navy team, under the coaching of Dora Branin, finished first in this division, defeating John Van Dorn's Green team 5-1 in the championship game. This game was 1-0 at the half but the navy came up with four in the second half to win easily. Stan Boyer's red team finished first in the league play and were seeded first in the tournament. After receiving a bye in their first game, the green team defeated them to qualify for the championship cham-pionship game. Other outstanding coaches in this division were Gary Larsen, Bryce Ostler, Jim Freeman, and Bruce Keetch. Division 4 (fifth and sixth grades) Loel Dubois' red team also had an undefeated season and swept through the tournament to win the championship. The championship game was a tough one as Ed Piatt's green team gave them all they could handle. This was the most competitive division as the kids are older and have more experience. Larry Huntsman's maroon team defeated Bob Harmer's navy team to place third in the tournament. John Geroux's royal blue team were defeated in the first two games of the tournament and were eliminated. Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place teams in each division at a skating party Saturday, Satur-day, Nov. 8. "Most Improved Player" trophies will also be awarded to one player from each team. Times for the parties will be 10 a.m. Division 1; noon Division 2; 2 p.m. Division 3; 4 p.m. Division 4. |
