Show Pleasant Grove all-stars have big win in tournament During this past week, 17 12-and-under girls fastpitch teams converged con-verged on Pleasant Grove for the Utah State Tournament for that division of play hosted by the Recreation Department. The state championship went to Taylorsville All-Stars, as well as a berth to the nationals to be held Aug. 8-10 in Richland, Wash, but local teams played well and placed high. SDI Steelers from Pleasant Grove took third place by beating Oquirrh Mountain 10-9. Aquirrh Mountain had aced out the Steelers for first place in the Jr. Timp Classic the week before, but the Steelers were not to be denied this game. Balanced hitting and defense marked the game as Gina Clark paced the Steelers with her fine pitching, but the hitting of Jennifer McMurtrey, Shani Anderson and Jenni Francom allowed the Steelers to go ahead in the top of the seventh inning. Fine defense in the bottom of the seventh allowed only one run and the win. A fourth place finish assures the Steelers a slot in the Rocky Mountain Regionals Aug. 25-27 25-27 in Fort Collin, Colo. Coaches are Julie Anderson, Glen McMurtrey and Mike Gordon. The Pleasant Grove All-Stars also faired well in the event. They lost two quick but clos games and dropped down into a second double elimination tournament. After a long day of play on Friday, the All-Stars All-Stars were the only undefeated team in the bracket with wins over the Blue Dolphins of Sandy, the Blue Thunder also of Sandy, and the Wellington All-Stars. Natalie Scott pitched all of the games for the All-Stars and set a vigorous pace which no other team in the tournament was able to match. Saturday night the Pleasant Grove All-Stars faced the Blue Dolphins of Sandy again in the championship game of the dropdown drop-down bracket. The Dolphins played very well but were no match for the All-Stars, as they soundly trounced the visitors 26-12. Congratulations to the All-Star team for their first place win and to their coaches, Rex Walker, Jerry Phillips, Woody Hemphill and Debbie Ostler, for all their time and effort in bringing together this team. |
