Show Kiwanis to restore G' .1 Boyd Fugal, representing the Pleasant Grove Kiwanis Club, told the Pleasant Grove City Council that the group wants to finish the work on the block "G" on the mountain as soon as possible. Fugal said that first they would need about 200 volunteers to go up to the site and improve the terraced water diversion areas above the letter. This must be done before a final effort can be made to complete the project. A few years ago a community effort was made to cement the "G." Plans have been made to fill in between the cement sides of the letter for some time but the work has not yet been done. The letter is regularly lighted by the Key Club at Pleasant Grove High School for Homecoming and graduation. Mr. Fugal added that the cement slab at the top of the letter has been undermined by flowing water and is tilted. This will have to be anchored. Rock needs to be transferred from the face of the mountain to some of the low spots. He told the council that the letter is 144 feet high and 100 feet wide. He said it would take 105 tons of calcite to fill in the block letter. This would provide a base three inches thick and would make the letter appear a sparkling white in the sunshine. Regular white washing would not be necessary. He noted that it would cost about $2,100 for the materials for that portion of the finishing job. In addition, ad-dition, mesh fencing would be used to hold the rock in place. He estimated that 92 pieces of fencing would be required and this would be anchored with rebar driven into the face of the mountain. & The cost for this would be about. , $1,564, or about $4,000 for the entire . project. He suggested that on Saturday, Nov. 2, the work on the terracing -begin. He said that 200 people would be needed to form a human chain to t move the rocks to the big letter. I He pointed out that they were trying to get the National Guard to use their helicopters to lift llie calcite to the site when they reach that part of the restoration. In case Q the National Guard cannot provide this service, the cost of hiring a commercial helicopter to lift W rock was discussed. -J The City Council placed-its sup- port behind the project and said the; Jr. 1 would do all they could to help. W encouraged all citizens who are awe .- to come out and work in the project ft |
