At Lehi, the Pioneers took a quick 6-- 0 lead and after four matches Lehi was on top 15-- Pleasant Grove's six points came from sophomore, Brad Mills, who won the 105 pound match for forfeit. Shane Jacob posted a win at 126 pounds to get the Viking momentum going and when Brett Anderson pinned Vaughan Carlile in the 132 pound bout, the score was tied at 15-1- From there the tight match turned into a Viking rout as PG won the final six matches to earn the 40-1- 5 win In addition to Anderson, Shawn Pueblo, Chad Maxfield and Dan Phelon won ther matches with falls over their Lehi opponents. Other Viking winners were Rick and Jim Shumway and Jeff Hamner. "We're young but the kids are starting to really wrestle," stated Darold Henry, Viking head coach. Tomorrow, PG hosts Region 8 favorite, Spanish Fork. The Don's are defending state champions and have a powerful team that has been crushing opponents in dual matches. Vikings down Pirates in non-leag- ue battle By JACK HILL Vikings and Pirates. The seagoing mascots clashed Thursday in Pleasant Grove with the PG Vikings taking a 78-7- 1 non-leagu- e basketball win'over the Cyprus Pirates. It was a wild, fast paced game, that had each team take com-manding leads. Cyprus appeared to be off to a big win early as their full court press rattled the Vikes into several first quarter turnovers. "Stay after these guys, they're not good ball handlers," said Cyprus coach, Mark Wilson, to his team during the first quarter break. At the time, Cyprus held a com-fortable 23-1- 6 lead over the struggling Vikings. What Viking coach Keith Allred told his troops was not heard but PG solved the press and outscored Cyprus 28 to 15 in the second period. With the score tied at 62, to open the fourth and final period of play, Cyprus' got the tip but Viking Scott Mosher stole the first pass, and drove down the lane to score with a nice move. Mosher's basket put PG on top to stay. Using a "three-corner-dela-game, PG ran the clock down and when given the chance, connected on the free throws and made the open layups. Greg Bahr, who had 17 points for the night, got a nice baseline basket and Kerry VanDyke soared down the lane with 55 seconds to play to nail two of his game high 21 points. PG's balanced attack was rounded out with 15 points from Mosher and 6 by Mark Clements. Brad Kitchen had 13 points and 12 rebounds showing that the big senior is steadily improving. Mountain View 55 -- Pleasant Grove 53 "You win some and you lose some on the last basket," a Viking fan was overheard saying as the crowd left the Mountain View gym Friday. Unfortunately, for Pleasant Grove, Mountain Views' Jim Payne had just hit the last shot to edge the Vikings 55-5- For the third time in pre-seaso- n play, the Vikes had been in a last shot game, winning one and losing two. Earlier in the year, PG edged American Fork on a last shot basket by Greg Bahr but had lost to Bear River on a last second shot. Payne's basket Friday came within three seconds on the clock following a Mountain View time out with 14 seconds to play. Coach Joel Gardner obviously wanted the. ball to go to Kent Lewis, the Bruins and Utah County's leading scorer. PG countered with a four man box zone with Clements guarding Lewis man-to-ma- When Payne was unable to get the ball to Lewis, Payne took the shot and it went in. Kitchen had his best game with 21 points before fouling out late in the , fourth period. Tracy Flinders had 12 points including a steal and a basket that tied the game in the final minute. VanDyke scored 10. PG opens Region 8 play Friday at Spanish Fork. American Fork Expires Feb 28 m Pleasant Grove Jr. Jazz action begins By MARY COONS The Cougars beat the Bucks on Saturday, 37 to 29 in Jr. Jazz league action for 7th and 8th grades. The defending league champion Cougars opened defense of their crown with a hard fought victory over the much improved Bucks. The Cougars were led by Lynn Green and Brandon Drake with 12 points each, while Devin Dyer, with 9 and Brent Rosenlof with 6 led the Bucks. The Spirits stamped themselves as the team to beat in Division II with an impressive win of 39 over the Jazz's 28. The Jazz team was formerly the Bullets. If some of the shots would have fallen earlier in the game for Jazz as they did in the fourth quarter, the Spirits may have been pressed. Jeff Swenson with 22 points was just to much offensive power for the Jazz. Nathan Ash had 10 points, and some tough board work which will be a factor as the season progresses. The Lakers beat the Celtics by just one point, 38 to 37. In one of the closest games of the day, the Lakers led by Brown's 16, and Johnson's 9, and were able to withstand a very good Celtics team. Gilbert with 14 and Hullinger with 12 kept Laker fans on the edge of their seats throughout the game. In one of the big upsets of the year, the young Pacer team upset one of the league heavy favorites, throughout the game. This game, along with the Laker-Celtic- s game suggests that Division I will be a dog fight for the division crown. In the cross-ove- r matchup bet-ween Division I and Division II, Division I showed to be the stronger of the two. Chad Frampton and Nelson led a balanced scoring at-tack with 14 and 9 points respec-tively. Webber's 8 points were just not enough to overcome the hot shooting Knicks. The game saw 15 out of 17 players enter the scoring column for the two teams. Game times will be 5 p.m. the Spurs, 33 to 32 on Saturday. It was one of the most exciting games of the day. The halftime score was 14 to 13 for the Pacers. Henry with 13 and Lloyd with 12 were the big gunners for the young Pacer team. Rules explained . The 1985 Fishing Proclamation, issued by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, was published ln a new and more readable newspaper tabloid format. Some confusion has arisen because fishing waters listed on Page '3 under the special waters regulation areas are exceptions to 'ne general fishing regulations. . The word "tributaries," was inadvertently omitted from the Soidier Creek Reservoir tributaries" heading. Regulations or these tributaries are the same 3s tributaries to Strawberry Keservoir - closed until July 1. Strawberry and Soldier Creek reservoirs are open for year-roun- d nshing. Normal daily bag limits of lght trut apply at both areas. |
