Show How does he spell doctor? Otorhiholaryngologist f If you are sent to an otolaryngologist do you have any more than a vague idea who you are going to? Dr. Craig N. Stevens, an otolaryngologist at the American Fork Hospital, says he is a doctor of medicine who has specialized in the care of the ear, nose, throat and related areas of head and neck. Though it is hard to believe, he laughs, the word otolaryngologist is an abbreviation of a still longer name - otorhinolaryngologist. The latter derives more aptly from the Greek base words: oto-ear, rhino-nose; rhino-nose; and larynx-throat. Dr. Stevens says the official title of the specialty is otolaryngology or head and neck surgery, which indicates in-dicates a wide variety of disorders which fall under this category. The otolaryngologist or head and neck surgeon is a regional specialist of specific head and neck disorders such as nasal infections and obstruction, ob-struction, common infections and problems of the ears (such as ear infections or otitis media), sinuses, tonsils, etc. Many treat nasal allergies, perform rhinoplasty surgery and other costmetic procedures of the face, deal with facial fractures of the nose, jaw and cheekbones, evaluate and treat tumors including cancer of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands, larynx (voice box), etc. Perhaps more familiar to many -especially those with small children - is the placement of tubes in the ears to treat fluid in the ears or ear infections. The specialists also perform delicate surgery to restore hearing. Speech evaluations and therapy is accomplished often with a trained speech pathologist and hearing disorders evaluated by certified audiologists who also assist in choosing appropriate hearing aids in patients who can benefit from them.
