Show Girl's choice goes with leap year ; u: . if By MARC'KI.LA WA1.KKR Today is Leap Year Day. It is the bonus day we get every four years so that the calendar doesn't get too far behind. Traditionally, this is a very special day. Those born on this date get to have one of the rare birthdays of their lifetime. We wish a "happy birthday" to all those born on this day and hope you celebrate it in real style. This day is also famed as a day girls can propose to the men. When we were young it was given a lot of recognition for this reason and old maids were admonished that this was their opportunity to rectify the single situation. There was usually a dance, girls' choice, of course, on Feb. 29. It was the next best thing to Sadie Hawkins Day and the females made the most of it. I haven't heard much about that tradition this year. In fact I wonder if many girls have even given any thought to this being their year for proposing marriage. What would the men do if the girls did propose on Feb. 29? They would probably all be like Lil' Abner and run as fast as they could. Another way to remember Leap Year is that it is always a m Tu .v. flans of parties than there werewhei,.1 young. h We had what was cafe it Accolaide at Ogden High S4 was a formal girls' choice? Celt v tonight and do something dariir presidential election year and an Olympics Year. We have had the Winter Olympics and they were wonderful. The whole female population of the U.S. has probably fallen in love with the terrific young skater, Scott Hamilton, who won a gold medal in figure skating. Phil and Steve Mayre did a lot for the U.S. ego as well, as did the other winning U.S. athletes. In a few months it will be the Summer Olympics right here in the good ole U.S. of A. All of the world will be turned to Los Angeles and this time American should win a few more golds than they did in the Winter Olympics. Not quite as exciting to the average citizen is the presidential election. Beginning with the Iowa Caucuses last week and the New Hampshire Primary Tuesday, the merry-go-round turns round. It will all culminate in the major party convention this summer. There is more hoopla over those extravaganzas ex-travaganzas than there is over the Olympics. Except the Olympics are more fun. Personally, I think it would be more fun to propose to some fine gentleman than get involved in politics, especially of the presidential variety. Back in the 1950's when Al Capp finally let Lil' Abner be caught in the Sadie Hawkins Day race by Daisy Mae, it was the main topic of conversation everywhere. Men were aghast and women smiled knowingly. The marriage of the two caused as much ruckus among Americans as did the final episode of M.A.S.H. last year. It seems to me that over the years there has developed a trend for |
