Show Review - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - Page 6 Sr. Citizens donate baby quilts to PI. Grove Ambulance Assn. Some experts at quiltmaking spent a couple of days putting together some baby quilts for the ambulance last month. Christie Kirkman, Reva Warburton, Florence Miller, Theora Blaine, and Lottie Carlson, all members of the " l.'IH11 " r""' I"IP"" M " I'lW' '"' T n WWwyJy ' . II ....III 111 MM WW ,"w'm lW ' ; ' ) unique group known as senior citizens, donated some of their time to provide the Pleasant Grove Ambulance with some much-neede- d quilts. This is not the first time the group has donated quilts to the ambulance, but the quilts are not something the ambulance is able to keep per-manently. They are used specifically to wrap up newborn babies who just happen to choose being born in the ambulance over the hospital. The babies are then sent home in the quilts. Doug Bezzant, a member of the crew, told Lottie last month that the quilts they had donated before were gone. So the seniors got busy and quilted them two more. One of the quilts was designed by Lottie's daughter. Lottie is the chairman of the quilt committee. They get a lot of support from the senior citizen director, Ruth Hassenfritz, too. Besides being a good director, "she's our official needle-threader,- " says Lottie. Robert Williams accepted the quilts on behalf of the ambulance crew. "Circumstances surrounding the birth of critically ill babies can destroy marriages and expose these infants to the additional risk of child abuse," says Sandy Garrand, family nurse consultant at the University of Utah Medical Center's Intermountain Newborn Intensive Care Center. 'Tarental responses establish this as probably the most traumatic crisis of a lifetime," she says. the. University of Utah, Parertt-to-Pare- t has' ft pioneered parent care' for r mothers and fathers of critically ill newborns," says Ms. Garrand. "A concept that is innovative, beneficial and a giant step from the archaic 1950s when parents of critically ill infants were not allowed to visit their babies in newborn ICUs." Parent-to-Paren-t, a volunteer association formed eight years ago, offers support to parents of the infants. The volunteers are parents who have had children in newborn ICUs and experienced the fears, guilt and isolation this Can cause. According to Ms. Garrand, parents usually do not expect a premature or ill infant. They do not understand what has happened and fear the baby will die. "Mothers often believe that a baby born early is not viable and will die soon," she explains. "The mother's first reaction is anticipatory grief, mentally preparing for her infant's death. She must come to grips with the belief that she is responsible for not delivering a healthy, full-ter-baby. It may be days or weeks before mom is able to believe her baby will live and resume the bonding process which begins during pregnancy." The upcoming video production illustrates the feelings of the mother and also tries to explain the husband's emotions. "A husband is often unaware of his wife's fears following the birth of an ill child,". Ms. Garrand explains. "While he usually wants to be encouraging and truthful, the husband shies away from discussing whether the baby may die." "Parents have no idea whether their feelings are right or wrong, forgetting that feelings just are," says Ms. Gerrand. "They'll hesitate to share their feelings with others, but talk for hours with graduate parents who've been through it all." The presentation also deals with the serious consequences of interrupting the parent-to-chil- d bonding process. The risk of increased incidence of child abuse can occur because of this interruption. "Separation causes a delayed bonding process, a deprivation that defies description," says Ms. Garand. "The sooner parents hold, touch and talk to their infant, the sooner bonding will occur, cementing the relationship." The show was made possible by a grant from Mead Johnson and Company. Support from the March of Dimes has contributed to its distribution.
