Show Toddler drowns in irrigation ditch ' An 18-month-old boy has drowned after falling into a swollen irrigation ditch at his home in Manila on Friday. Det. Jens Home of the Utah County Sheriffs Office reported that Skyler Stanford Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Leon Smith, 4164 W. 8800 N., apparently wandered away from where his father was working in the yard. Det. Home said that as soon as the father realized the child was missing he searched the yard and called the Pleasant Grove Police who arrived on the scene after notifying the Sheriff's Dept. The child's body was seen under the water, wedged near a bridge over the stream. The baby was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and CPR at the scene and was transported to American Fork Hospital by Pleasant Grove Ambulance teams who maintained the mouth-to-mouth and CPR. After several hours of attempted revival at the hospital the child was pronounced dead. Det. Home said that because of the runoff the water was at its maximum capacity in the ditch and was murky. The water flow through the ditch was lowered so that they could look for the boy easier, the Detective explained. The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. SKYLER S. SMITH |
