Show - THIS WAY GUYS - Assistant Coach, Darold Henry, watches Coach Doug Bluth demonstrate a technique during Monday'ssTwo k "Hell Week" (two a day practice sessions) continues through tomorrow. The Vikes are optimistic about the coming season. ' "1 As I See at J. FORD ANDERSON I have heard it said that about 25 percent of the work force in America belongs to unions. That means that 75 percent have very little bargaining power to force their employer to increase their wages, or benefits or whatever. The only bargaining power they have is their own efficiency and the need that the organization has for their services. When the wages of the strikers are increased it is usually the people that get stuck for the bill. The en-terprise is forced to increase the sale price to compensate for the wage increase, hence John Q. Public pays the bill. I don't have the figures, but I would like to know what percent of the wage money in this country is paid to union labor outside of ad-ministrative funds, and what percent is paid to non-unio- n labor outside of ad-ministration funds. Every time wages are raised it means that inflation gets another boost. The cost of producing the product is in-creased when labor is in-creased so we have more inflated prices. And who pays the increase? The people pay it. It gives me a very good feeling to know that we have a - president who is not afraid to stand up to the unions. Maybe America has a chance to get back on its feet. Unions above anyone should respect the law of this land. If the aeronautical controllers can't get what they want without breaking the law, then they got what they deserve. No, I don't think strikers should lose their jobs unless they break the law or take unreasonable advantage to increase their income. According to the reports on the news, it takes about 17 weeks to complete the course to enter the field of aeronautical controller. Granted, they are fresh out of the course but, no doubt, will improve with practical ex-perience. When you compare this to school teaching or farming or practically any field, the time of training is much different. I don't see Why they feel they can demand such large salaries as $25,000 to over $40,000 per year. It appears to me that they are very much overpaid. They have received most of their training on the job while receiving a salary. Most of the technical fields require many years of training before they go out into their fields. I feel that unions have caused much of our inflation problems in this country. They have gone way beyond reason in their demands for increased , income and it has thrown our economy out of balance. it ! ; i ' (Wid'Timers9 Quiz Can you identify the item shown below? "Education for All Seasons" was the theme of the conference. Representatives of Colorado's Cherry Creek School District No. 5 and Jefferson County Schools, discussed their vear-roun- d programs. have an easier time finding a job. A big advantage of teachers are increases in their salaries by teaching an extra term. It was explained that some teachers earned more than the administrators. A disadvantage was that teachers were unable to attend college in the summer to up-gra- their skills. The biggest advantages of the year-roun- d program, according to the participants, were the millions saved in building construction; decreased absenteeism for both students and f r i ir"c- Him rv Vi - i f K lnoc The Cherry Creek program utilizes four tracks, increasing school building capacity by 33 percent. Students attend school for 45 days and then are off 15 days. All students have a few weeks off for the Christmas and New Year holiday. William White, assistant superintendent for Jefferson County Schools, said that district began year-roun- d schools after trying double session, temporary buildings, por-table classrooms, and were threatened with triple sessions because of booming student growth. ' He explained that his district uses a three-trac- k system with students attending school four months and vacationing two months twice a year. This increases the school capacity by 50 percent, he noted, since the number of vacationing students equals half the number of students in attendance at one time. Families whose students go to year-roun-d schools have the advantage of vacationing when resorts are not crowded and high school students learning loss; and a decreased high school dropout rate since students who drop out may easily and less conspicuously. Other advantages of the program are the opportunities for students who fail to be able to repeat a class in upper grades rather than being held back for a year. Students also can take extra classes for acceleration and enrichment. There are the disadvantages of communication difficulties for staff and studentbody as all are not present at one time; cost increases for library and secretarial personnel; scheduling for all children in one family; han-dicapped programs and main-tenance; and the workload of ad-ministrators is increased, it was explained. Even with year-roun- d schools, Jefferson County has built eleven new schools; two high schools and four elementaries since starting the program, officials said. Taxes Continued from Front Page lot of factors - that the Supreme Court would say yes, you have to give it to them. If you do that, you have cost the school districts about $6 . million and other units of local government across the state another $12 million." .. .. - "Serving 1 North Utah ' County 31 t Steuuiu Soiilh Main.
