He added that neither the junior high school nor the two high schools could cope with all the freshmen. After a lengthy but civil discussion, the mothers condeded that the plan as proposed was the most efficient. The board unamiously approved the measure. The board divided Orem into Four quadrants. Those ninth graders living in the Northeast quadrant will attend Orem Jr. High. Those in the northwest nor-thwest will atend Mountain View High School. Those in the The Alpine School District approved a measure to send equal amounts of freshmen to all four secondary schools in Orem, but not without some flack from concerned parents. Kathy Griffiths, Francis Watkins, Sherry Liston and Ronelda Connors, all from Southeast Orem, made several complaints com-plaints to the Board last Wednesday morning. morn-ing. The issue was whether a decision made a special January 25 meeting was adequate. ade-quate. At that meeting, concerned con-cerned parents and administrators ad-ministrators and school board officials drew up a tentative plan to divide Orem into four quadrants with approximately approx-imately one-fourth of the ninth graders each of Orem's four secondary secon-dary schools, including the new Mountain View High School. Speaking for the group of parents, Mrs. Connors said she felt the January 25th meeting did not represent repre-sent a consensus of opinion opi-nion in the city. All four stated they did not like the idea of ninth graders attending the high schools. All four have freshman youth going to Orem High School this fall. Mrs. Liston explained, explain-ed, "Not all ninth graders are emotionally mature enough to handle han-dle the high school situation." Clifton Pyne, coordinator coor-dinator of high schools southeast will attend Orem Senior High and those in the southwest, Lakeridge Junior High School. The new Mountain View High School is expected ex-pected to have 1,247 students this fall, Orem High will have a projected pro-jected 1,415 students. At a recent district faculty meeting in Orem, Supt. Peterson was asked how long the freshman situation would last. He responded, "It shouldn't last longer than four years. That's when the new Junior High School should be finished. Any superintendent superin-tendent who isn't pushing to have that junior high school built in that amount of time is derelict." |
