Show THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 1979 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, JANUARY 25. 1979 Vikings Split Games Last Week, Cedar City, Payson and Paysons' Hiatt. Peay was 6 for 10 from the field and 7 of 7 from the line for 19 points. Garth Hansen added to the cause with 86 from the field for 13 points. Good Viking defense prevented Payson from getting the ball inside and forced them to take bad outside shots. Mark Atwood and Dave Ratliff's key steals and rebounds helped the Vikings break the game wide open in the final minutes and the game ended 59-4- 8 in favor of the Vikings. P.G. hit 8 straight free throws in the final minutes to preserve the win. by Chub Gillman The Vikings basket-ball team split two Region 6 games last week as they lost a heartbreaker to Cedar Thursday, 67-7- and then came back to knock off Payson 59-4- 8 on Friday. The Vikings seemed to lack their usual in-tensity, and Cedar took advantage with the hot shooting of Jensen and Cory. Mark Atwood kept the game close with 8 rebounds and 16 points, and Kevin Peay added 16 from the out-side, but the Vikings had trouble of defense as the Redmen were able to work the ball in-side for good shots. P.G. had a one point lead with 58 seconds left, but a missed shot gave Cedar the ball and the lead. The Vikings then went down and another tough luck shot for the Vikes made things look hopeless, until hustling Dave Ratliff stole the ball with 23 seconds on the clock. The Redmen then stole the ball right back and put it away with 2 foul shots with only 2 seconds remaining. Viking Jayvee's Beat Cedar City and Payson by Jeff Jackson After being outscored 20-- 6 in the first quarter the J.V. team shook off the blaws to come back and down the Cedar City Redmen 79-5- January 18, at the P.G. high school. The Redmen totally dominated the first quarter by out scoring the Vikes 20-- 6 but PG came back in the second quarter to outscore the Redmen 27-- 4 and take a 9 point lead in to the locker room at half time. They continued there hot streak into the third and fourth quarter.; with guards Kim Walker (who had 9 points) and Wayne Whitely ( with 11) feeding the ball to cen-ter Kevin Ash won con trolled the boards and came up with an im-pressive 25 points. Foreward Kelly Memmott also had a good game with 8 poin-ts, all in the fourth quarter. J.V. Edges Payson After having a good day against the Red-me-shooting 58 from the field, they had a bad day against the Payson Lions shooting only 39 from the field, however, P.G. managed to come up with the win, 41-3- in a close hard fought ball game. The team played good defense throughout the game. The Vikes won by four points after Kim Walker stole the ball passed to Justen Bone who made a three point play. Sophs Win Both Games Against Cedar, Payson by David Rutter Justin Bone scored 24 points a high for the Sophomore team on the year and in the game against a weary Ceder City team. The Vikes went on to win 67-4- At half the score was 32-2- But that was about as close as Cedar came. P.G. came back out and out scored them 23-- 8 in the 3rd quarter. Although, it was a deuce in the final period of play. Kevin Allridge helped the cause by ad-ding 12 points and Craig Swapp popped in 8. "We played a fair game," stated Coach Jack Hill, "Cedar just wasn't up to par." The Vikings sophomore basketball team got a big win over the Payson Lions 58-3- 6 Friday at P.G. It's the second time P.G. has beaten Payson this year. It was a fairly close game up to the end of the first half with the score 26-2- But the Vikes blew it open in the 3rd and 4th quar-ters. A powerful offensive drive and strong defen-se play outscored them 32-1- Vikings coach Jack Hill said, "we had expected a much closer game." It 23 OFF Continues All Fall & Winter Merchandise Sale Starts Friday, Jan. 26 Open 9:30 a.m. Moubz of Mlm 13 East Main American Fork Last Week's Action Roundabout Races on January 1 3 There was plenty of action to be found at the Round-Abou- t Dragstrip again last Saturday, plus lots of good entertainment. No matter what the weather you can watch in comfort because your in the warmth and comfort of your own car. The action started with the new '2 wheel class'. Garrett Bennett in his 46 Ford sur-prised a lot of people, as he took the lead away from the current Class Winner, Scott Hubbard, for 2 out of 2 heats. Gary Carter in a borrowed Blazer proved its skill as well as machinery that wins the tyrophy. He was up against Ed Peter-sons good looking red and white Chev. Gary won 2 out of 2 for the win in the Pleasure Class. There was another new comer at the Drags this week in the form of Leroy Page in of all things a beautiful brand spanking new 79 Ford Stock Vi ton. No one paid a lot of atten-tion to Leroy because he's a quiet guy and he just stood back and observed for a while. But when his class was called he was ready and waiting. When it got to the final it was Leroy against Robert Noble and his big black Chev. Leroy took 2 out of 2 for the winning trophy in the Vi ton stock class. Ted Atencio and his modified Dodge left Chuck Goode looking at his tail lights as he crossed for the win in the 'A ton modified class. By the time the Vt tons were called up the strip was pretty mud-dy. Rob Andreason's past experience paid off. He moved out fur-ther on the track to make new grooves for his tires. The 1st heat was Robs, but his op-ponent, Larry Webb was ready for him on the second round. The ended tied or a dead heat. 3rd try proved lucky for Rob as he crossed the line in the lead and took home the trophy. It took 3 tries for Mark Byeers to come out the winner in the Jeep Class. His com-petitor Jim Long proved to be pretty stiff competition. But Mark made it in the 3rd heat. Mike Nagle was back this week with his fast moving V.W. powered buggy and Randy Warenski was right there trying once again to beat him. But Ran-dy's still got a few bugs to take care of. Mike and his buggy just powered across the finish for 2 out of 2 in the Dune Buggy Class. There were only 2 gals willing to compete in this weeks Powder Puff and one of them had to borrow a truck. Kathy Nagel had to put the pedal down hard to stay ahead of Vickie Warenski but she made it to take her second trophy in 2 weeks. There was some beatiful machinery en-tered in the Top Eliminator Class. Dodges, Chevys, For-ds, at the end of the 2nd heat Gary Carter and Leroy Page each had won Once. In the 3rd heat they were neck and neck off the starting line by the finish, Gary was about a bumper ahead. It was really a beautiful race to watch. |
