Show Wood Cutting Permitted Cutting of down and dead wood is still permitted per-mitted on the Uinta Na-. tional Forest. It has become necessary for the Kamas Ranger District of th Wasatch National Forest to not issue any new permits because of a rash of fires, some of which have been caused by woodcutting activities. This action is impacting impac-ting the Heber Ranger District and other areas on the Uinta National forest with numerous requests from the public to cut firewood. To date, the Uinta National Na-tional Forest has not experienced any fires due to woodcutting activity. ac-tivity. Forest Supervisor Super-visor Don Nebeker feels that in the best public interest. Woodcutting will continue to be open until circumstances indicate in-dicate that a change in policy is needed. Mr. Nebeker is seeking the cooperation of woodcutters woodcut-ters to use extreme precautions because of the high fire danger. He feels that by employing adequate precautions, the need for wood to meet energy conservation conserva-tion requirements can still be met. Fire Staff Officer Gordon Colby stated that Federal regulations regula-tions stipulate individual in-dividual are liable for fires they have caused or allowed to burn out of control. Mr. Colby also stated that mufflers muf-flers on chain saws should be in good operating condition. Sparks from chain saws are a primary cause of fires. Sparks may smolder several hours before actual ignition occurs. Woodcutters should have a shovel or fire extinguisher in their possession to suppress sup-press a fire, should one start. The public is urged to make advance contact with Uinta National Forest district Ranger offices in Heber, Pleasant Plea-sant Grove, and Spanish Fork for information infor-mation on wood availability and best locations. The forest Service reminds the public that no standing trees may be cut without a written permit. per-mit. Also, the public is encouraged to exhibit courtesy to each other and to be sensitive to protect the natural resources during their woodcutting activities. Special emphasis should be given to staying stay-ing on roads and trails. The Forest Service staff will be intensively monitoring woodcutting woodcut-ting activities to ensure that proper fire precautions: precau-tions: arc being taken. |
