Show THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1977 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW. PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1977 Wrestling ... Blank Springville, Provo Next 'Pin!" "Fall!" By either name, that's what Pleasant Groves wrestling squad is doing like never before. WRtSTLWGAIH PINS In just four matches, (Jor-dan, Cedar City, Springville and Tooele) the Vikes have scored 29 falls out of a possible 48 varsity matches. PROVO TONIGHT When the green and white Bulldogs line up tonight in the PG gym, will things be any different? According to Coach Henry, Provo, a one point winner over Timpview last week, will field a "few good wrestlers." "The heavyweight match should be a good one to see", said Henry. He pointed out Y I A - 1' " - 'J ' '.. ., , - , " --- '" . ' .... '- i . v' j, " v ' that there will be in excess of 560 pounds on the mat when Darryl Peterson takes on Provos six foot seven inch, 270 pound grappler. BRIGHTON TOURNEY Friday and Saturday PG is entered in the Brighton Tour-ney in Salt Lake. Host Brighton along with Hillcrest and Viewmont represent 4-- powers. PG along with an old rival at a new school, Dennis Preece from Uintah and now at Cyprus will be two of the 3-- schools in the meet. Tomorrow's session is at 7:00pm with sessions at 1:00 and 6:00 pm on Saturday. SPRINGVILLE Shutouts in baseball and football are rare and never happen in basketball. They are not common in wrestling either and thats why it was surprizing when PG whitewashed Springville 64-- 0 last Thursday. Doubly so considering most observers , including Coach Henry, thought the match would be resonably close. The only "close" match was sophomore Barry Fraizer's 7-- 5 win at 98 lbs. After Fraizer got the Vikes off to a 3-- lead, thinesErot worse for the host Red Devils. Before it was over, PG had eight falls, four in the first period, to send the fans home early. The j.v. pounded Springville 55-1- 2 to score there fdourth straight win without a loss. PG 64 Springville 0 98-- Fraizer dec Wilks 105-S- . Goodman dec Jenkins 12-- 112-R- . Right. American Fork's Cavemen and controversial coach, Carl Ingersoll, will play in the PG gym tomorrow night. The tall talented Cavemen, n picks to battle Provo for the Region Six title will be out to avenge last years three defeats at the hands of the Vikings. Whats more, unless the Vikes can eliminate the mistake problem (25 turnovers against Spanish Fork last week) thats just what AF will do. Everybody in both towns knows PG will "slow it down", a strategy used by Coach Keith Allred to whip the Cavemen at least once each year for the past several seasons. Two weeks ago against Provo, PG handled the ball well enough but couldn't make the hard earned shots. Last week the Vikes didn't do well in either category, losing 66-5- 6 to Spanish Fork. Robert Keate, Viking cen-ter, had his best night of the season. Keate scored 13 poin-ts while pulling down 11 rebounds. He hit on six of nine field goal attempts. The six foot two inch post man will have his hands full tomorrow guarding AF's big Gary Beck. Tip off is at 7:30 and the usual big AF PG crowd is expected. LEHI SATURDAY Saturday, PG will host Lehi. The Pioneers have a very good team and could be a 2-- con-tender. Susan received 3rd place on bars, 5 th place all around, 1st on floor, 4th on vault. This is outstanding to place in the state championship. : 1 f ' , " i " - H ' - W I ' " W ; I mm i i . - ? Ute Cougar Basketball by Jack Hil- l- Jerry Pimm at Utah had a great recruiting year. He signed five very sought after freshmen that will keep Utah in the WAC title race for the next four years. However, in witnessing the first round of the Utah Classic it became painfully clear how much the Utes will miss Jeff Jonas. Jonas, billed as the "world leader in assists", made Utah go. Last year to the WAC title and the final game of the NCAA Western Regionals against Nevada-La-s Vegas. As yet Coach Pimm has not found an adequate replacement for Jonas and moving two time forward, Jeff Judkins to guard is not the answer. As a forward, Judkins is a super player. As a guard, he's just another player. High school wonder boy from Skyline, Danny Vra'nes, made the transistion . to college ball and looks good in a starting role. He's white but jumps like he was black. The Utes signed six foot ten inch Tom Chambers right out from under BYU. Along with veteran Buster Matheny, he should carry Utah to another 20 game season. BYU? One veteran basketball authority here in town predic-ted the "new breed" at BYU would go 0 this year. That was before the season started and the Cougars nearly beat UCLA in Pawly Pavillion. That game caused fickle BYU fans to flock to the Big Mac expressing sentiments like "we've got a good team this year." Now that Coach Frank Ar-nolds squad is the sen-timents are, "what happened to them." By seasons end, those same fans will stay away in record numbers, claiming no association with that "good team." Coach Arnold recruited two good players in Danny Ainge and Keith Rice. He also gave a full scholarship to Paul Voss, a seven-foote- r that didn't score a point in the UTC j.v. game. As one sports buff remarked, "BYUshould trade Arnold to Utah for Pimm, then the Utes would have another turkey to go with Wayne Howard." Snow conditions (packed or powder), total snow depth, new snow, lifts in operation, road conditions and weather forecasts for all Utah ski areas are reported in a recor-ded message compiled daily at 7 a.m. by the Utah Travel Council. The report is up-dated during the day if there is a significant change in ski conditions. The snow report number is (801) 521-810- Seven Utah ski areas are now open, all reporting good to excellent conditions on snow depths of up to 5 feet. Skiers are reminded that snow tires or chains in possession are required in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons until March 31, 1978. Four wheel drive and front-whee- l drive vehicles are not exempt from this regulation. Current highway infor-mation is available from the Utah Department of Tran-sportation, (801) 532-600- Information on ski touring conditions is also available through the U.S. Forest Ser-vice, (801) 486-633- |
