Show THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1977 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, J977 American Legion Auxiliary Has Meeting, Hears About Conditions in Peru The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 70 December meeting was held at the home of June Monson. The foreign relations country studied was Peru. Karen Green related her experiences while serving a health mission in this coun-try. Karen became very well acquainted with the people and circumstances in Peru. She related that it took only 60 seconds on May 31, 1970 for a catastrophe to engulf nearly 2 million people living in a 32,000 square mile area in the North and North Cen-tral Highlands of Peru. A disastrous earthquake killed, injured or orphaned 140,000 men, women and children. It left over 100,000 people homeless and severely community people who are building schools for the first time. It is important to "help young minds "grow" and essential to give them an op-portunity to develop their potential. Much depends on their ability. We can help, remembering that it is these children with whom our children and grand-children must be able to communicate and cooperate with in a world of shrinking distances and in our own hemisphere. The Legion Auxiliary meeting was conducted by President Thelma Barnes. The pledge and preamble were recited by the group. Chairman Bobbie Duvall of-fered the prayer. She displayed the many beautiful items that had been brought from Peru. Several cities were almost completely leveled and 7,000 classrooms were destroyed. In July, 1970 authorities estimated that rehabilitation programs would take several years to complete. Some con-tinue today. Over a million Peruvian children cannot go to school due to a lack of classroom space. The American Legion Aux-iliary CARE Program is helping villagers repair classrooms damaged during this earthquake. The auxiliary is also assisting Battle Creek Camp DUP Holds Meeting on Friday, Dec. 9 The Battle Creek Camp D.U.P. met Fri, Dec 9th at the home of Mrs. Eva Proctor. President Wright welcomed the members and gave a report of the camp business. The group sang "Silent Night", prayer by Maymetta Johnson. Minutes and Roll call were given by Secretary Cora O. Bezzant. The Lesson Leader, Viola Cowley, presented an in-teresting life history of John W. Hess, entitled "An En-during Legacy, " The Hess family lived in extreme poverty and had many problems with the mobs. She told of experiences they had while crossing the plains. Mr. Hess had a large family and they had to depend on Divine help many times. He died in 1903. Sec. Cowley then told the story of the "First Christmas in St. George" as was written by Bro. George Cannon. Eva Proctor exhibited a number of albums with pic-tures, stories, and geneology she has collected of some of her relatives and friends. At the close of the lovely meeting and social, the hostess with the help of her daughter, June P. Robinson of American Fork, and Maymet-ta Johnson served tasty refreshments to the 12 ladies present. First Grade Party at Grovecrest All the first grade students at the Grovecrest School are busily getting their Christ-mas program ready. The program will be held Monday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. and all parents and family are invited to attend. Each first grade student will have a special part on the program. V '' . ' - J V- y (' V' i MISS ANGELA ALLEN AND SCOTT BARRETT Angela Allen, Scott Barrett to Wed on Friday, December 23 Angela Allen will marry Scott Barrett on Friday, December 23 in a ceremony to be performed at the Thirteen-th Ward Chapel in Pleasant Grove. A wedding reception will follow the ceremony with receiving from eight to ten p.m. Angela Sue is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd W. Allen of Pleasant Grove and the late Nellie Louise Bunce. She is presently a student at Pleasant Grove High and is a member of the Pep Club. Scott Doyle is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Doyle Barrett of Pleasant Grove, and is a graduate of the Pleasant Grove High School, class of 1977.. Showers have been planned by the bride's sister, Kathy Averett and friends Merilee Wilson, Melanie Andersor and Anelle Lindsey, sister of the groom. After their marriage the couple plan to live in Southern Utah, where Scott will attend college. Pleasant Grove Garden Club Has Christmas Party The Pleasant Grove Garden Club had their annual Christmas Party at Sil's Seafood Inn, with fifteen members present with gifts exchanged. The importance of the oc-casion was the instalation of the new officers of the Pleasant Grove Garden Club for 1978 by Lucille Hillman. President Moya Told presided over the meeting, she thanked those whom have served during the past year. Pres. Told wished the new of-ficers continued success and for all officers to shoulder the particular calling that makes for a strong club. Those present. Moya Told, Irene Earl, Lucille Hillman, Velma Gillman, Ruth Cob-ble- Evelyn Schoonover, Eva Reynolds, Claudia Brown, Edna Hunt, Larena Warnick, Mary McCandles, Mary Shoell, Verland Sailing, Veatrice Stewart and Alice Simper. Manila Daughters of Utah Pioneers Meet The Daughters of the Pioneers, Manila Camp meet at the home of Lois McEwan. The meeting was conducted by Thressa Anderson. An opening prayer was given by Donna Olsen. Then an Opening song, "O Come All Ye Faithful" was led by Sara Jense, with Lucy Haycock as the accompanist. Sara Jense presented the lesson "Sketches of Yester Year and Special Christmas mementos were shown. Christmas Carols were sung accompnaied by Lucy Haycock. Sarah Jense then read the story, "The Christmas Tree by Juanita Brooks. Gifts' were exchanged and the closing prayer was by Janet Humble. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses, Lois McEwan, Donna Olsen and Ruth Jackson to 14 guests. Variety Club Entertained at Christmas Party at Harpers Charles and Mary Harper entertained the Variety Club at a Christmas Party last Saturday night. A delicious fried chicken and roast beef dinner with all the trimmings was served to members of the Club and their husbands, their home was beautifully decorated with tree and other Christmas decorations. Each one recieved a candy cane as a favor and gifts were exchanged, a good time was had by all, those present were Eldon and Evelyn Schnoover, Harold and Myrle Armit-stead- , Joe and Mary Swenson, Arlo and Dorothy Walker, Reed and Ida Halliday, Margaret Kelly, Eva Reynolds, Juanita Larsen and the Host and Hostess. At another recent meeting of the Variety Club Margaret Kelly was elected President of the Club for the coming year of 1978 with her is Beth War-burto- n as Vice Pres. and Evelyn Schoonover as Sec.
