Show THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1977 PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE. UTAH THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1977 Will Fight . . . Mountain Fuel to Fight Lawsuit on Tax Salt Lake City - Mountain Fuel Supply Company said today it will fight a law suit filed against the company yesterday by Gary Operating Co., Englewood Colorado. B.Z. Kastler, Mountain Fuel president, said the suit by Gary is not based on the price of gas purchased by Mountain Fuel. "They claim recent Federal Power Com-mission opinions alter the contract between the two companies requiring us to pay certain state taxes. We contend that the original contract is still valid, and they should continue to pay those taxes as they have in the past." "The contention that we have not passed along to them the higher price of gas we have been receiving in our rates is not correct. The whole matter has to do with taxes, not the purchase price of gas," Kastler said. Mr. Kastler said that with the approval of the Utah Public Service Commission, Mountain Fuel has been collecting the disputed money in its rates. However, the money has been reserved by Mountain Fuel pending a resolution of the question with Gary. "If our position wins out, the money will then be returned to our costomers," Kastler said. "If not, it will be paid to Gary." "We feel we have an oblication to keep our rates as low as possible," Kastler said, "so we will fight claims like this one. We'll not just pay companies like Gary more money because they think we should." Planning Commission Development Meet The Pleasant Grove City Planning Commission will meet with aH interested citizens of the northeast side of town on Thursday, April 7, 1977 at the city hall begin-ning- 6:00 p.m. to discuss an d review future residential development in this area. There are presently several subdivision plans being reviewed by the planning commission and the planning commission wants to make sure that the approved plan s are acceptable to the area residents and property owners and therefore want to discuss the proposed plans with the effected property owners. One of the proposed subdivision plans has over 200 lots which shows the ef-f-development in the area will have on the city. There are plans to include in this area a number of planned unit developments and the feelings of the area residents of this plan are requested by the planning commission. All city residents are en-couraged to attend this im-portant meeting. Published March 24, 31 April 7 Your Man In Washington By U.S. Senator Orrin G. Hatch What About TV Violence? During the second season of prime time, "family hour" program-ming last year, the Senate Subcommittee on Com-munications held public hearings in Salt Lake City on the effects of televised violence on children. Con-cerned citizens at that hearing expressed distrust for the national television networks' stated objective, "to limit the quantity of violence during the view-ing time of children. " The statistics are now in, and apparently the mistrust expressed by Utahns in Salt Lake City were well founded. Dr. George Gebner and Dr. Larry Gross of the School of Com-munications, in an ongo-ing television violence pro-file, report, "The level of violence on television has not decreased, but in fact remains constant even with the institution of the 'family-hou- r' in prime time." University of Utah professor Neil Hickey in his study, "Does TV Violence Affect Our Socie-ty? Yes," which was first published in TV Guide, says children can become desensitized. The report concludes, "Normal emo-tional responses to human suffering become blunted and (this) desensitization may easily cause not only major increases in per-sonal aggression but also a growing-attitud- e of indif-ference for victims of real-lif- e violence." Dr. Robert Liebert, a psychologist at the State University of New York, says, "The more violence and aggression a youngster sees on TV, regardless of his age, sex or social background, the more agressive he is. . ." The television in-dustry counters the moun-ting evidence connecting anti-soci- behavior and the television violence by stating, "The complexity of the human animal and the variety of stimuli that bombard him make it im-possible to judge the im-pact of violent television." A good faith effort on the part of the networks being improbable, vigi-lenc- e by the Salt Lake television stations at screening objectionable material seems to be the only immediate answer while the U.S. Congress wrestles with legislation.
