Mines' football. Being 30 miles from the L.A. Coliseum on Thanksgiving weekend, with Southern California playing Notre Dame was to much of a tem- - dollar seat?" Smiling as I thought of Immetta, I took a 10 dollar one and walked in awe through the arch into the Coliseum. Built for the 1932 Olympic Games, it is now home of the S.C. Troians. U.C.L.A Bruins and L.A. Rams. The huge bowl will seat over 100,000 and along with 76,000 others, I found my seat,(on the 63rd row of a 79 row section) and drank in the drama of the 50th year and 48th game of the "nations greatest inter-- sectional college football rivalry." (There's talk of changing to the metric system, califor-nian- s already have their own way of measuring distance. They do it in minutes! Places are not so many miles from somewhere. It's so many minutes on the freeway. If your walking or riding a bike, your out of luck. You have no idea of how far it is.) Along with the crimson and gold clad football team and 220 member band, the "nations most famous college mascot is introduced. Thun-dering out of the west tunel comes Traveller III. Astride the pure white arabian is a Roman Trojan warrior with gold sword flashing above hi scarlet cape. I held my breath as he took the turn full speed and raced down the track in front of a roaring S.C. cheering section. Notre Dame, dressed in white shirts, yellow pants and shinning gold helmets, held the number two ranked Trojans scoreless until! the last minute of the first half. Both squads went to the air in the second half with S.C. holding on to win, 17-1- Then the blocking and tackling really began. Seventy-- six thousand people on their way to the parking lots. The Coliseum was "35 minutes from Disneyland when I came. The return trip, on a jammed freeway, put Disneyland two hours from the Coliseum, which, I guess, shows the fallacy of measuring distance in Minutes. NEXT WEEK: Calico Ghost Town ptation. Friday night I contacted Immettas Ticket Agency located in the shops next to the Disneyland Hotel. "Do you have any tickets to the S.C. game?" "Yes, I can get them" was the reply. I questioned, "how much?" "25 or 50" was Immetta's matter of fact reply. Puzzeled, I asked, "you mean yardline?" Immetta answered,"25 or ' r 50 dollars." Her voice had a diffinite "you tourist dum-my" tone to it. "Yov've got to be kidding," I shot back. "Oh no, the games been sold out for months," she said, adding, "S.C. alums buy all the tickets." Immetta con-tinued, "If you want yardage seats, they're 75 dollars." "Well, Im not that in-terested in going", I said, starting to leave. "Here's my card," Immetta offered, adding, If you decide to come to the Rose Bowl, get in touch." The man next in line tur-ned and spoke out of the side of his mouth as we both walked away, "I'll watch it on the RCA for that price." (I later found ot that to Californians, going to the game isn't as important as where you sit. "Yardage" seats are a symbol of social and economic status, which seemed to be very important to the Californians I talked j to.) Game day, Saturday, found me still tempted. A phone ' call revealed that ticked prices were up. Immetta was now asking 35 and 85 dollars! Dejected, I hung up. An hour later, with an "unusual wind" toppling trees in the parking lot and caving in the glass doors to , our hotel room,(it blew Jeff and Lorene Hriensons door clear down) I called again. ; Tickets were now going for 20 and 40 dollars. Something was wrong. Demand was down; there were tickets j available. Grabbing the car keys, as I sprinted out of the win-dblown room to the parking lot, I was soon on interstate Five headed north to L.A. ; About 10 miles from the stadium, I saw a cigar shap-pe- d object circling in the smog laden air The Goodyear Blimp Columbia! What hap- - pened to the wind? A quick check of trees near the freeway showed no movement. Minutes later I was jogging across a tree lined green toward the towering arch of the ; Memorial Coliseum, coats ; and sweater now under arm. The weather was beautiful; : shirtsleeves on November 27th.
