Show Vikings Dump Carbon Last Friday by 14 to 3 by Jack Hill Pleasant Grove shook off the long bus ride and a weak first half effort to score two third quarter T.D.'s and defeat de-feat Carbon 14-3 in a cool, windy win-dy night game in Price last Friday. Carbon got on the board first with a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter and lead at the half, 3-0. After holding Carbon on the initial drive in the second half the Viking ground game began to rip the Carbon defense. Dale Wright carried 5 times on the 12-play, 38 yard drive and gained gain-ed 41 yards before leaving the game with a bruished knee. Ron Moosman carried the ball on two Q.B. sneaks to go the final 3 yards for the go-ahead score. John Goodman hit the Swenson had two fumble recoveries, re-coveries, Karren had one and Greg Carson made a picture perfect interception to stop a Carbon drvie. Wright's knee injury and a possible broken finger to Bruce Murdock puts both players in doubt as to tomorrow's homecoming home-coming game with Lehi. Game time is 5 p.m. and another big crowd is expected in the Viking Vik-ing stadium. Statistics PI. Gr. In the first half, Carbon rolled roll-ed up 74 yards in offense, but the Viking defense lived up to expectations in the second half and held the Dino's to just one first down and a scant 28 total yards, to take complete command com-mand of the game. It was the defense that forced for-ced a "Dino" fumble, recovered recover-ed by Kay Swenson on the 15, on Carbon's next series after P.G. had scored. Six plays and two penalties later, Kelly Duke nosed in from the one for the Viking second T.D. and with Goodman's P.A.T. the score went to 14-3. Final quarter action was dominated by Pleasant Grove. The defense limited the Dinos to 12 yards while the Viking offense posted 67. The "big gainer" was a 35-yard pass on a third and 28 situation. Moos-man's Moos-man's pass was caught by Brad Hardy who outmuscled two defenders de-fenders for the ball. The game ended with Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove threatening again on the Carbon 18. Fullbock Ted Karren had his best day carrying the ball 11 times for a tough 35 yards. Duke and Brent Pulley both ran well in the second half and gained 36 yards between them. |
