Show SPORTSMEN We are a group of sportsmen who are worrying about Utah's game birds and animals. We don't want to bring up the past but we are very concerned about the future. We want our children to see what we once saw in Utah, but we think our animals, and birds may be a thing of the past. We think more steps should be made to preserve our animals, and and these are some suggestions we think would help. One point we want to put over is the fact that all of this must start with the people themselves. To accomplish this, more rules and stricter rules should be set up and enforced. People should be taught the difference dif-ference between an elk and a deer. People should also be taught how to really be a sportsman,, and what this word really means. People who call themselves sportsmen are killing kill-ing hen pheasants, doe and fawn deer, and domestic animals ani-mals during the hunts. What they really don't realize is that they are cutting their own throats. If things like this keep going on, there won't be anything any-thing to hunt in the future. We thing if all hunters can be made sportsmen and live up to it, then we can start to curb the problem. Another thing we are concerned con-cerned with is the rules and regulations of the Fish and Game Department. This split season on the elk hunt was very hard on the herd this year. The either sex hunt on the deer was really hard on a herd that is already down very low, Areas that once contained large herds were barren this year. The few does and fawns we did see were being shot and slaughtered by so-called sportsmen. sports-men. This surely cannot help the herds in the future. We understand they had a hard winter, but why kill the few females that did make it thru the winter. This can only hurt the future herds. You may wonder won-der what we base our conclusions concl-usions on, and the fact is that we spend 12 months a year watching the deer. We ride the herds year around and many of us take our vacations during the hunt. We can honestly say that this past hunt was one of the worst we can ever remember. remem-ber. We the sportmen and taxpayers taxpay-ers of Utah want something done, to preserve what herds we have left. Maybe some literature liter-ature could be sent to the sportsmen. More and stricter rules should be posted and enforced. en-forced. We would like to see those who are put on the Big Game Board voted on. Why can't we have the people we want, in there. We would also like to see more of a buck only oriented hunt, in the "future. It is a known fact that a species cannot increase in numbers without females. You kill the females, and you kill the herd. If you consider yourself a sportsman plase write your Congressman so maybe something some-thing can be done. DAVID L. BEARDALL RFD Box 22A1 Spanish Fork, Utah |
