Show Vikings Lose to American Fork Last Week 26-15. Second Loss for Year By SCOTT CANDLAND Herald Sports Writer The American Fork Cavemen used their offensive trickery to perfection Friday afternoon as they downed the Pleasant Grove Vikings 26-15 on the Viking field to win the Region Six football crown. Watching the American Fork Cavemen move down the field on offense, is like watching a . basketball team move down the court on a fast break, or like watching a baseball team complete com-plete a double play. So many of the Cavemen handle the ball on some of their offensive plays that it is nearly impossible tj follow all of the action. The impressive aspect of the Caveman team, is not so much the complexity of their offense, but the precision with which the team uses to make their trickery touchdown. The PAT kick was no good, but American Fork had increased its lead to 14-7 ' "T- ' Vikings Narrow Lead The Vikings closed the gap to 20-15 with just two seconds left in the third quarter. The Viking drive started on their own 15. Allred ran for 10, and a 15-yard Caveman penalty left the ball on the Viking 45. Eyre, Allred and Higginson combined com-bined for 17 yards, before Eyre broke loose on a beautiful draw play for about 30 yards, putting the ball on American Fork's 20. Allred got five more, then Higginson swept his right end for the touchdown. The Vikings lined up for a PAT kick, but instead Higginson passed to Brent Fullmer and the two point try was good cutting the score to 20-15 for American Fork. The American Fork offense fumbled just twice in the ball game. The first fumble was recovered by A.F. in the Viking ;nd zone to complete a two-point PAT try, and the second was recovered by Pleasant Grove. Considering the number of ball exchanges between Cavemen, that low fumble figure is impressive. im-pressive. The offensive line for American Fork was also quite effective. The most noticeable of the blocking Cavemen was 6-1, 190 pound Alan Cooper. That guy as everywhere on offense. The Cavemen run a lot of sweeps, and it became routine to see Cooper crunching Vikings as he ed the offensive backs down the field. The game started off bad for Pleasant Grove however, as star ineman and co-captain Russ dams was forced out of the jame with a knee injury still rvith 7:40 left in the first quarter, rhis had to hurt the Vikings, tecause Adams as well as being i talented football player is also in effective holler guy, and a real team leader. Though the Cavemen won the jame, the Vikings were the first team to light the score board, rhe Viking defense must receive some of the credit for the score lowever. Viking Score The defense twice held American Fork deep in Caveman territory prior to the Pleasant Grove score. Each lime, the Vikings received the jail in good field position. Kraig Higginson, who stands just 5-7, combined running efforts with Murdock to move for two yards before Eyre powered his way in for the score. The extra point kick by Bob Lott was good and Pleasant Grove assumed an early ear-ly 7-0 lead. The Caveman stormed right back however, as smooth running run-ning Jon Varney returned the kick off to the Viking 20. Then with Kevin Bullock operating from the quarterback position and Varney from the halfback spot, the two alternated end sweeps to quickly move the ball to the Viking 32. Varney, playing quarterback gained one more, and Mark Fowler broke loose for about ten yards to put the ball on the 20. TD Pass On the next play, Varney pitched to his wingback, who almost' simultaneously handed off inside to Fowler for a small gain. The touchdown came on the next play as Varney rolled out to his right, and spotted Max Strasburg standing alone in the end zone. Varney's pass was on . target, and the Cavemen had their score. Their two-point conversion con-version was fumbled, but alert Mark Fowler fell on the pigskin in the end zone to successfully j complete the two point play. The Cavemen assumed a lead they ( would not relinquish, at 8-7. American Fork increased its i lead to 14-7 with 7:20 left in the ! second period. Fowler returned a Viking punt to the Caveman 45. Quarterback Kevin Bullock was thrown for an eight yard loss by Kyle Whitehead, but runs by Bullock and Fowler, plus a 15-yard 15-yard penalty against Pleasant Grove made up for Whitehead's good defensive effort. From the 40, Varney, back in at quarterback, pitched the ball to Kurt Holmstead, who then pitched to Fowler, who outran the Viking secondary for the 40 yards and another Caveman |
