Show Traffic Deaths Rising for Year of 1 970 It is possible that traffic deaths in Utah will surpass the total for 1969, Karl Richards, Safety Director, Safety Council for Utah County stated today. Already this year 287 persons have died in traffic accidents as compared to 308 for all of last year. "With drivers in the State facing about six weeks of the most adverse driving conditions," condi-tions," Richards said, "it is conceivable that Utah will establish es-tablish a traffic death record worse than last year and could surpass the worst record, established es-tablished in 1966 when 330 persons per-sons were killed. A combination combina-tion of bad weather, road conditions con-ditions and driving errors lead to traffic mishaps which claim lives, produces injuries and ; contributes to a staggering economic eco-nomic loss which affects all drivers." The accidents being reported ! on the State's streets and high-l high-l ways, it was pointed out, are often the product of good driv-om driv-om Tho so called bad drivers. those who have accidents repeatedly re-peatedly and or receive traffic citations, can't be held totally accountable for the accident picture. "Good drivers should want to become better drivers," Richards Rich-ards stated, "by enrolling in the Defensive Driving Course being coordinated by the Safety Council for Utah County. This eight hour course," he continued, con-tinued, "teaches the good driver driv-er how to recognize danger on the streets and highways and what evasive action that should be taken in order to avoid being an accident victim." A small registration fee is charged at the time of application appli-cation to cover the cost of the materials used in the course. "Individuals who have been previously enrolled in a class," Richards said, "and have not had an opportuntiy to cnmplete the four sessions, may do so without any additional costs." |
