Show Drugs, Youth Problems Are Council Subject Experts in drugs and related problems of youth will present a triple phase program at the Women's Legislative Council meeting Thursday, Nov. 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Provo Utilities Building, 251 West 800 North, according to Mrs. Pauline Ol-pin, Ol-pin, president. The speaking trio will include C. LaVar Rockwood, currently director of the Division of Drugs for the State of Utah; Mrs. Roxie (Lee G. Nelson, chief of Children's Services Division Di-vision of Mental Health, consultant con-sultant for Rural Mental Health and consultant for WICHE, U-tah U-tah Mental Health Areas; and Dr. Eugene J. Faux, director of hte Youth Center, Utah State Hospital. The speakers will be introduced intro-duced by Mrs. Sterling (Rosa-mand) (Rosa-mand) Ballard, chairman of the Council health committee, who arranged the program. Mr. Rockwood will present an over-all summary of the drug problem as it exists today. A former representative for a pharmaceutical company, Mr. Rockwood has had ex5nsive experience since that time in ' the field of education with emphasis em-phasis on youth related programs. pro-grams. Prior to heis appointment appoint-ment as director of the Division of Drugs, he was assistant Dean of Students at BYU. He also has been a private consult- ant for business management, i lecturer and consultant for counseling programs in public schools, and was director of I student special services at the BYU. He completed graduate j work at BYU, University of i Utah, and Washington State University. He graduated from ; the University of Utah in 1953. Dr. Faux will report on the current needs of the Youth Center Cen-ter program at the Utah State Hospital. A graduate of the U of U in 1948 with an M.D. de-yree, de-yree, he was conferred the F.A.P.A. in 1964 by the American Ameri-can Psychiatric Association. He was appointed director of the Youth program at Utah State. Hospital in 1964 and was nam-clinical nam-clinical instructor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Utah School of Medicine in i 1967; consultant in Child Psy chiatry, National Institute of Mental Health in 1968. He received re-ceived hte "Physician Recognition Recog-nition Award," from the Amer-j Amer-j ican Medical Association in 1970 I Dr. Faux is a popular speak- j er on mental health at all types ! of functions. As a sidelight he i also is an accomplished cellist and pianist, and he and Mrs. ! Faux present many "people j appreciation" programs and ; musicals to various groups in I the community. Mrs. Faux is I on the BYU faculty in Speech ! and Drama, j Future plans for the mental i health services for children in i Utah will be presented by Mrs. Nelson. A mother of five children, child-ren, all at home, Mrs. Nelson has worked in child related programs through her career. As a public health nurse in Granite School District, she served ser-ved as a member of the first ! team offering consultation to parents and teachers of children chil-dren with behavioral problems. Later she was instrumental in i developing the "Youth Service program" in Salt Lake City, which counsels adolescents. She also has worked considerably consider-ably in Indian health and men-! men-! tal health services. Mrs. Nel- j son received her B.S. degree in Nursing (cum laude) from the U of U in 1962, M.S. degree in Clinical Psychiatric Nursing Nurs-ing and Education in 1964 and completed fine quarter postmasters post-masters in 1966 at Columbia University. |
