Show PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1968 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1968 . t-- "SILENT NIGHT" "Silent Night" was first sung at Christmas in 1818. j The church organ in an Austrian village had broken down as a result of mice, so : the story goes. Father Joseph j Mohr wrote the poem and his ; organist, Franz Gruber, com posed the music. j The congregation, which had been saddened because i there would be no music for Christmas, sang "Silent Night" to a guitar accompaniment. We know that Christmas is a time of faith. It is a time when lost strength and courage may be renewed in the quiet still-ness of a church, in the somber darkness of a solitary room, even in the hustle and bus-tle of the crowd. Hope springs eternally from the Christ-mas message and in the great example of the life and death of Christ, there is for all men the promise of a greater and a better tomorrow. There is no more significant time for all of us to count our blessings and, at Christmas, they seem to be more abundant' than ever. What is the 'Spirit of Christmas?' Have you ever wondered exactly what someone means when they express the wish that "the spirit of Christmas reach into every heart"? One thing is for sure. The spirit of Christmas cannot be summed up in a single word. It encompasses joy, peace, faith, hope, and gratitude as a mere beginning. Christians', of course, rejoice in the true meaning of Christmas. It is the birthday of the Saviour--an anniversary of the day on which the Christ Child appeared on earth to show mankind the route to eternal sal-vation. We know that Christmas is, essentially, a time of peace. The coming of Christmas has never put an end to a major war or but almost invari-ably even a minor skirmish, it does cause men to pause, to think and, more often than not, to pray for peace. If the spirit of Christmas abounded all year long, there would be no wars. g m Jrn the holidaij spirit ' ' g ' g M we take time out to thank ff ' g fl our customers for their i t loyalty, friendship and JJ " ' patronage throughout the I l I " & year. "Nowell" or "Noel" means birthday news or a "shout of joy" for the birth of Christ. The earliest carols were songs of the Nativity, the In-carnation and the Annuncia-tion. Later, ones on shepherd themes and the Epiphany were composed, and there were also many of folk origin on the fes-tivities of the Christmas sea-son. These latter included such songs as "The Holly and The Ivy." Many of the surviving old carols were originally part of the medieval mysteries and miracle plays. CHRISTMAS, FLA. Christmas, Florida, postmark on thousands of holiday packages each year, is located 23 miles east of Orlando and was originally established as a fort to provide protection against hostile Indians some 126 years ago. Today, thousands throughout the United States and Europe send packages to be mailed from Christmas, now a symbol of peace and good will. CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS The origin of many Christ-mas customs can be traced back to prehistoric times. Some Pagan customs were modified to fit into the Christian observ-ances. But, as official Christian Holidays, Christmas ami New Year's had a long struggle to become firmly established. |
