Show state engineer to report on beryl enterprise area the best possible utilization of land and water in the beryl enter pries area in western iron county will be made known as soon as the report of a survey just completed can be compiled oscar F bartholmew assistant soil surveyor working out of the berkeley office of the U S department of agriculture reported friday in a co conference with state engineer T H the survey report is expected to quiet luiet controversies arising fron time to time as to the possible agricultural development of the lands several attempts to colonize the area have been made classification of the land was requested by the state engineer after applications were filed in the state stale office to drill large irrigation wells water from which would equal the entire underground water output for the state each well applied for requested a second foot of water A largo large colonization project was anticipated the colonization plan was the fourth of its kind three having already failed in the area the state engineer contended that a detailed survey should be made to determine the depth of the soil and the crops it would raise in order to prevent recurrence of such failures failure A land classification report dividing the area into three classes of arable and three non arable lands will be released within the next few days by dr D S jennings of the soil department of the utah agricultural experiment station mr bartholmew reported the state cooperated with the department of agriculture in making the study another report more detailed and including alkali data and topographic maps will III be published bother department of agriculture as soon as the compilations are made topographic maps for the present survey were prepared by the state engineer in cooperation with two other previous studies have been made of the land 0 one ne by director william peterson of the extension division of the U S A C and professor george D clyde of the utah experiment station and one by W N white of the U S geological survey mr bartholmew who was in charge of the survey conducted the past 20 months said a study of soil alkali data drainage problems eros ion and topography has been conducted on square miles of land more than tests were made to determine alkaline content alone he reported A study of lands in the proposed beryl pump area was made as well vell as lands now under irrigation near new castle and enterprise we found a lot of good land and a lot of very poor land he said 1 and gathered data on large acre 1 ages which can be utilized for grazing purposes this survey fits into our program for a complete inventory of the states land and water resources mr humpherys said |
