Show Add Spice To Baking By LIZ DARTON Maxine Leavitt is one mother r i who believes in starting girls to cook while they are young We caught her in the act of teaching her daughter Lisa 4 and a neighborhood friend Marnie Mamie Cloward the fine artof art of cookie making Maxine and her husband Don also have two sons Kenny and Russell KENNY is attending Dixie College and Russell is a junior student at Davis High Maxine Maxine Maxine Max Max- ine and Lisa spent a lot of time in the kitchen and Lisa is developing a love lov for cooking cooking cooking cook cook- ing and helping mother that will vill be a great asset in a few years Here are a few of Lisas Lisa's favorite cookie recipes CARAMEL COOKIES 1 cups brown sugar 1 cup butter 3 eggs 3 cups flour 1 tsp soda in 3 Tb cold water Vz Ih package raisins ground 1 cup walnuts chopped 1 tsp vanilla y tsp salt Cream together sugar and butter Add the eggs and mix well Add the flour and salt and blend Add the soda dissolved dissolved dissolved dis dis- solved in water the raisins and nuts and mix mi well Drop by the teaspoon on greased cookie sheet B Bake ke at degrees degrees de de- de grees for 10 minutes GINGER SNAPS 3 eggs of 3 cups sugar 2 cup shortening or butter butter butter but but- ter ter 12 Tb molasses t. t j. j i 6 cups flour 1 salt j k 11 C tsp 3 tsp soda lV 3 3 tsp cloves 3 10 3 tsp cinnamon I 3 tsp ginger Cream the shortening and sugar together add the eggs and mix well Add the molasses molas molas- ses and beat until thoroughly blended Add spices to the flour and gradually sift into t moist ingredients and mix Form into small balls and roll in sugar Place on cookie sheet do not flatten Bake at degrees about 15 min min- minutes utes until a light golden brown NO-BAKE NO COOKIES J 4 cup sugar is Tb fib cocoa Vz rh cup butter lh cup milk Dash of salt Combine in saucepan and bring to a boil Take from the heat and add 3 V 3 cups quick oats Vz cup coconut 3 2 cup nuts 1 cup peanut butter 1 tsp vanilla Mix well and drop on waxed paper by the spoon spoon- ful Chill until firm Marnie's Mamie's mother is a great cookie maker too so 50 we borrowed borrowed borrowed bor bor- rowed some of h her r recipes Ken and Rita Cloward are the parents of cute red headed Marnie Mamie and her brothers Morgan Morgan Morgan Mor Mor- gan 8 and Mitchell 2 The Cloward brothers like to assist assist assist as as- in cookie baking although Mitchell really doesn't help helpa a great deal Here are some of of Marnie's Mamie's favorite cookies S STORYBOOK COOKIES 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking powder i lh is tsp s salt sait lt Vz cup butter 4 3 cup sugar 7 l 1 legg egg 1 tsp vanilla 1 Tb Th milk Cream butter and sugar together together together to to- to- to gether add egg and beat until until un un- til smooth and fluffy Stir inthe in inthe inthe the vanilla and milk Sift in dry ingredients and blend Chill the dough one hour Rollout Roll Rollout Rollout out dough on well floured board to about t inch thick thick- ness Cut with cookie cutter and bake in lightly greased 1 pan for 6 to 8 minutes at degrees until delicately browned If desired frost or or- better yet let the children do it PEANUT BUTTER-BLOSSOM BUTTER Vt cup butter third one-third cup peanut butter cup sugar i lh cup packed brown sugar 1 legg egg 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup flour 1 tsp soda tsp salt Cream together butter and peanut butter brown sugar and granulated sugar until smooth Add egg and vanilla and blend Combine flour soda and salt and sift into the theother theother theother other mixture Mix and shape into balls using about 1 tsp batter Roll balls in sugar Bake at degrees for 8 minutes on cookie sheet Remove from oven top each with a candy kiss Press down candy kiss so each cookie cracks around the edge Bake for 2 or 3 minutes longer |
