C WALKER Do children still celebrate May Day It has had such sucha a bad connotation in recent f years that one wonders if this is is another pleasant time that has been abandoned IT IT WAS quite a day for children at one time All the holidays were over and the summer ones didn't begin begin begin be be- gin until July so we made the most of this pleasant break in spring Each child made a May basket of colored art paper We learned how to cut the basic basket shape and cut and weave strips of paper and our baskets were lovely ON l IA MAY Y Day we had areal a areal areal real fun-day fun at school and this concluded with several Maypole dances each class competing for beauty and honors After our concluding song we left for home It was then that we picked any flowers we could find in bloom and put them in the baskets One was hun hung on the front door the one who finished the decorating decorating decorating dec dec- orating first and the others presented to the elderly and those whose children were too grown up for our simple gesture gesture gesture ture of love ONE MEMORABLE May Day I could not find anything anything any any- thing but dandelions for my basket so I picked the largest largest largest larg larg- est blooms and filled it then proudly walked to our next- next door neighbor with my gift She was a pretty testy old woman she was nearly ninety ninety ninety nine nine- ty but still vigorous vigorous This This woman woman woman wom wom- an had gone through the Civil War and had known poverty of a severe degree I guess if you couldn't eat it it had no value for Cor she took my basket sniffed it and said Dandelions and threw it as far as she could NEXT YEAR my basket hung on our door I was taking taking taking tak tak- ing no more chances with a neighbor It was a fun holiday and I wish all youngsters could enjoy it in m an old fashioned unpretentious way |
