| Show r o oBy By BERT BOYACK f l NELLIE BALLARD This Week Nellie Ballard West South ml ful Utah Nellie Ballard came to Utah some ome 45 years ago with her late husband Wilbur to assist as as- his parents for the summer summer sum sum- mer on their farm They enjoyed enjoyed en en- joyed the area and were satisfied satisfied satis satis- fied to make their home andrear and andrear rear their children here t f- f J A NATIVE of Los Colo NelI Nellie e was the fourth of 12 children Her father was wasa 4 a college graduate and farmed farmed farm- farm ed cd in the Los area until an asthma condition 4 forced them to move to a drier cl climate mate The family f moved to Sugar City Colo when hen Nellie was six years of age J I HI decided to bea be a teacher th the first day I w wen went e n t to school Nellie admits and andI I never had an any doubt about If what I wanted in life After Aftel After Af Af- ter tel 12 years of public schooling school- school schooling I ing and a summer term at State Teachers College at Greeley Colo she began her teaching career in a country school SHE CO CONTINUED to teach e in in the public schools during the school yc year r and attended the thc Te Teachers chers College in the summer Upon completion of her training and graduation from the State Teachers College College College Col Col- lege she taught four years a at Sugar City Colo where when she had attended high school Nellie transferred to Telluride Telluride ride Colo as a junior high hig school teacher where she taught taugh another six years It was he here that she met and marri married Wilbur Ballard The couple lived in Telluride until the they were needed by Wilbur's parents par parents in Utah SHE HELPED her husband husban with the peach farm until 1935 when she was appointed appoint to the position of postmistress at Woods Cross by Frank Franklin W Roosevelt I found the PostOffice Post Pos PostOffice t Office work very stimulating and pleasant I came to understand understand understand under under- stand and love the patrons patron and I have many friends amon among them My relations with the employees employees employees em em- were warm and they too top are still my most loved love friends She retired from th the Post Office in October of o 1962 HER HUSBAND Wilbur di died in June of 1962 He was a carpenter and machinist b by trade and was employed at atHill atHill atHill Hill Field before his retirement retirement retire retire- ment in 1958 They have two children Wallace living in Indianapolis lis father of two children Jo Mrs Frank Fenwick living in Bountiful has twin daughters in high school and four step-children step who are married and nine grand grand- children NELLIES NELLIE'S retirement has given her time to find great satisfaction in hobbies as well as to continue with her service service service ice to the Bountiful Community Community Community Church Since joining the Bountiful Community Church in 1932 when it was a small mission church she h has s served as superintendent of the Church School sang in and led the choir and was instrumental in raising funds for the original original inal church building SHE HAS been president of the Womans Woman's Fellowship and other church women's omens groups Upon her retirement from postal service she requested that an oil painting be given to the church in memory of her late husband rather than the usual gift for retiring personnel Her hobbies are varied but she particularly enjoys reading reading reading read read- ing and keeps abreast with world events I am very much interested in domestic and foreign politics Christianity Christianity Christi Christi- Christianity anity as well as other great religions MY ATTITUDES are liberal and I try to keep informed on all national and world affairs she relates Other interests include music and gardening Hybrid lillies are areher areher areher her specialty and she has many lovely varieties of roses Her garden contains annuals which I choose for constant color throughout the growing season Nellies Nellie's careers and service in her religion have given her experience which has taught her to set goals and strive to attain them Never stop learning Widen your hori hori- zons I am an optimist and andI I believe that mans man's destiny is Upward and Onward |
