Show Miners mince Manila for season's fifth win -v: ill 0 by Dave Adler Opportunism and a balanced scoring attack helped the Park City High School basketball program reach a milestone of sorts Friday night as the Miners downed Manila on the road, 64-56, to earn their fifth win of the--year, a victory which surpasses their total of a year ago. "It was a significant win for us," said Miners' coach, Paul Willard. "We made timely plays in pressure situations and played a pretty solid basketball game. I think this win represents the kind of progress we're making in our program." Willard is in his first year as the Park City mentor after coaching tours in Ogden and Provo. In running their season record to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in Region 11 Division One league play, the Miners controlled the game from start to finish. After breaking an early 2-2 tie, they consistently maintained leads of six to 10 points and even stretched that to 16 points late in the first half. Bruce Buckner paced the balanced attack. In playing what Coach Willard described as a "solid, all-around game," Buckner poured in 18 points to pace the Miners. He hit on six of nine attempts from the penetration from his guard position created a number of scoring opportunities for his teammates and it took him to the foul line." At the charity stripe, King was true on eight of nine attempts, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. "Mark Knudson played his best game of the year," said Willard. "He had six rebounds and played good defense. He had some key blocks in the last quarter. " "Mapstone had eight assists, the most anyone has had all year," Willard continued. "He played a good game, and came through with some key plays." The Miners scored at a 44 percent clip on 24 of 54 shooting from the field. They were also good on 16 of 23 attempts from the foul line, a 70 percent performance. "Our goal is to make 70 percent of our free throws," said Willard. "If we do that and shoot as well as we did, we'll win more than we'll lose." The Miners hope to maintain their momentum Friday when they host second-ranked North Summit, 11-3 overall and 7-0 in league play. "It will be a challenge for our kids," said Willard.
