The 14-year-old Palmer overcame over-came second place finishes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a strong second run on Monday to capture the top prize against competition which was several years her senior. "It was a great weekend for Stephanie," beamed Park City Ski Team coach, Jim Clifford. "She was very consistent, It was her best series of the year." Palmer has apparently fully recovered from a bruised knee that slowed her early in the year. As Clifford said, "she's. rolling now." Stephanie's adventure began Friday in the ladies' giant slalom. She produced the fastest time on the second run but it wasn't good enough to prevent Rebecca Dolsot of Sun Valley from taking home first place. Twelve-year old Shannon Nobis of Park City, who was to enjoy a successful weekend herself, took third place, while Cammy Potter finished seventh. Bridget Les-chorn Les-chorn joined her teammates in 13th place. In Saturday's giant slalom, Stephanie nosed out Dolsot but had to play second fiddle to University of Utah freshman Janique Farand, who captured first place. In Sunday's slalom it looked as though Stephanie Palmer would crack the winner's circle. She skied to the fastest time on the first run, but University of Utah skier Monica McDonald blistered the course on the second run to overtake Stephanie for the crown. Farand finished third. These two collegiate skiers must have been wonderins how a 14 year old had Xloished between them. Or, for that matter, how they had just narrowly edged 12-year-old Shannon Shan-non Nobis, who finished fourth. Cammy Potter placed 11th. While center stage had been denied to Stephanie on the weekend, there was no holding her back on Monday. She was in third place after the first run, but in the last run, in the words of Coach Clifford, "she just smoked it," to win the race and earn the overall four-race title. |
