Show P.C. runners to wind up season in . St. George Saturday The St. George Marathon, which traditionally culminates culmin-ates the season for Park City runners, is scheduled to begin at the crack of dawn this Saturday. At least 13 Parkites will be on the starting star-ting line when the gun goes off. They will be competing against 2,200 other runners from all over the west, the west. "It is probably the most popular marathon in Utah. The course is fast and very scenic," said Pat Manning, who has run in past St. George marathons. The course loses approximately 3,000 feet of elevation, he reported. Among those registered for the race are Ride and Tie veterans Marit Glenne, Mary Coelho, Moon Willett, and Bev Gray. Also planning to compete are Rolf Sand-berg, Sand-berg, Craig Duerr, Bob Wilkinson Wilk-inson and Tracy Zweig. According to Manning, several other Parkites will be running their first marathons. The first timers include Dick Beaufait, Lisa Watkins, Chris McLaren, Pam Thompson and Gary Johnson. Manning plans to be in St. George to cheer the locals on, but he will not be racing. "It will be a good time. Everyone goes down makes a whole weekend of it. There is a big dinner at Dixie College the night before the race and you meet some great people." , Because the course is predominantly downhill, Manning says, runners all over the West come to the St. George Marathon to try to qualify for the Olympic trials. This year, female races will have to record an official marathon time of less than 2 hours and 51 minutes to qualify. Men will have to beat 2 hours and 19 minutes. The times are based on the cutoff time after af-ter the 100th male and female racers to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. Runners from April 1983 to April 1984 to get an official time for the , Olympic trials, "and if they want to get in the trials this is the course to do it on," said Manning. |
