A By Jim Smedley It was supposed to be the sternest test of the season for the PCHS tennis team - the type of game coach Dave Chaplin might lose sleep over the night before. Last year St.. Joe's whipped the Miners 4-1 enroute to the 1-A state championship. But when the season opener for both teams ended Park City was on top of a lopsided 5-0 win. The Miners lost only two sets in the April 9 battle, i Chaplin, who had been shifting his lineup through the preseason matches trying to determine the singles seeds and find the right chemistry for the doubles, saw his lineup gel on April 8 when the Miners faced Wasatch in its last .preseason game, j He actually did not make 'the change but rather put his . . stamp of approval on Ted Bird and Paul Dyer's request to trade places. Bird had been playing as number the three singles seed and Dyer the number one doubles team. "It was an agreement between Ted and Paul and the switch was alright with me," Chaplin said. "Paul had more singles experience since he played number two singles last year. Ted hasn't had as much competitive experience on the tennis courts this year and felt more comfortable in doubles. ! "There is real wisdom there," Chaplin said. "Now we are set unless something happens as far as injuries or eligibility." Dyer responded to the switch by dusting his opponent, Kevin Willard, 6-2. 6-2. "Paul played his strongest match of the year. He was very aggressive. He was getting his first serve in then 'attacking. He kept the pressure "on all the time," said Chaplin. j Bird and Mike Jarosz 1 combined to defeat Harry Wong and Bo Arbogast 6-0, 6-7, 6-1, in the number one doubles slot. "I think they (Bird and Jarosz) took a nap in the the giggles," Caplin said. "It was the strangest set of tennis I've ever watched my kids play." j In number two doubles jplay Colyn Adamson and Scott Pirraglio dropped Brain Barker and Steve Bamberger 6-2. 6-0. Glicden Extends Streak Sophomore Shawn Glicden. who has yet to lose in high school competition, extended his winning streak to 15 with 'a 6-2, 6-2 thrashing of Alan Lipman in the number two 'singles spot. They went undefeated through the season and won the state championship. The win was a typical Gliedcn victory. He showed strong serves and ground strokes and waited for Lipman to make mistakes. Derrick Olsen had his hands full in defeating Greg McDonald 7-6. 3-6. 6-3. 'Derrick had a lack of concentration in the second set." Chaplin said. End Preseason With a Win The day before its first I -A match Park City disposed of 2- A rival Wasatch in Heber 3- 2.- Park City won the first preseason match against Wasatch -1-1 at the Park City Racquet Club in M nvh. Coach Chaplin was anxious I'm I !. i cmaich because he wanted to sec how his team would perform on outdoor courts in unfriendly territory. "1 wanted to see how we would play in the wind and sunshine and on courts that are more of a public nature than the facilities we are used to." Chaplin said. "I was also interested to see how the team performed with all sorts of distractions such as traffic noise and passerbys." "They did just great," Chaplin beamed. Number one singles player Olsen had the toughest time adjusting to the conditions losing his match 6-4. 6-3. to Malts Aridsson. whom he defeated the first lime around in three sets. Chaplin said Olsen played better at the PC Racquet Club and was thrown off by the environment. "Arvidsson is a good tennis player. I wouldn't be surprised if he won the 2-A championship. He is the strongest number two player 1 have seen." .Chaplin said. In other singles action Gleidcn drubbed Jason .Smedley 6-4. 6-2. and Dyer struggled for awhile before subduing Brett Heimbcrger " 3-6. 7-6.6-5. ''Paul played Heinberger's game in the first set then he figured what he had to do in the second." Chaplin said. "He won the " tiebreaker 12-10 then just kept il going in the third set." Wasatch also Hexed its muscles in the number one doubles spot. Blaid Baud and Pat Sullivan handled Miners Bird and Jaros. 6-2. 6-4. "Baird and Sullivan arc ; very good doubles team. 1 should be an intercslinj. fight between them and the Granstville doubles team in the slate tournament." Chaplin said. In the number two doubles Adamson and Pirraglio stopped Scott Ritchie and John Patterson 6-2. 3-6. 6-3. The Miners next matches w ill be against South Summit at Kamas on April 23 and on April 24 they tackle St. Marks at Salt Lake. |
