They are working on the skills of sequencing sequenc-ing and predicting the outcome of stories. The class is continuing the study of birds and how they live. The students have developed a particular interest in what the different birds eat and how they get their food. The next science unit will be the study of zoo animals in preparation for the trip to the zoo. t To conclude the unit on square dancing, the kindergarten students stu-dents danced in costume at their Valentine party. The boys and girls have enjoyed their participation in this year's ski program and they enjoyed Fun With Renee Day. After the February 14th Valentine Valen-tine party the boys and girls in Mrs. Salomon's first grade class continued their art appreciation, by studying Renoir, Rodin, Van Gogh, and this week, Miro. In science they made a "Magic Garden". This was a crystal formation made by combining charcoal, water, ammonia, and salt. The recipes written by the children themselves went home to parents. In math these students are learning about coins and they are counting by tens and fives. They enjoyed their slide show about Switzerland which Dr. Peine, the school psychologist, furnished. The new scooter boards are being enjoyed in P.E. classes by the first graders in Miss Davis' and Mrs. Bogue's rooms. The store is still an important event each week. Students are learning to make change when they pruchase items in the store and gradually having larger denominations of coins to handle. Sea animals are being studied in science and the children enjoyed observing hermit' crabs that Mrs. Barlow brought to school to share with the classes. Learning center activities are involved with this study and last week the children made Sea Foam candy. Fun With Renee Day was the Big Day last week. Mrs. Jana Cole has coordinated this year's ski program. It has been a success and we can thank her for all the time and effort she has given. Second graders under the direction of Mrs. Reed are almost finished with their clay pots. They've been working with Tom Willet at the Kimball Art Center. The children had the opportunity to see the Athony Smith exhibit at the Art Center while they glazed their pots. They loved the pictures and the real objects in the pictures. Boys and girls in second grade have been working with Mrs. Cole on a water unit in science. They've learned about the three states of water; solid, liquid, and gas, and about the water cycle. - These students too, were excited about Fun With Renee Day. Second graders in Ms. Smith's room have written and illustrated their own books and bound them in hard covers. These special stories were placed in the library so other students could read the literary genius of their second grade friends. Map skills are being continued in social studies. Last week four members of a reading group in Mrs. Bailey's third grade, Steven Gillette, Andy Miller, Rachel Dreyfuss, and Kenna Dean read a play called "Soup for the King" adapted from a story by Leonard Kessler. On Thursday they made potato soup for the entire class. Their efforts were very successful and the whole class enjoyed the treat. In math under Mr. O.B. Jensen's direction, third graders are re-inforcing concepts in addition, subtraction, multiplication multiplica-tion and division. This week a "Math Learning Center" will be in operation. Third graders are doing writing emphasizing sentence structure, form; including margins, spacing, word division, and titles. Children are working on individual experiments in science that includes written reports. They are beginning seed planting projects. A metric measuring center is a big interest in Mr. Kim Jensen's fourth grade class. Students are busy measuring objects in the room using metrics. Science projects are developing for the Science Fair. Reports and displays will add to the projects. "What are we doing in reading that's special?" "We're Reading!" Read-ing!" answered the fourth graders grad-ers of Room 9. They are playing reading games. The students are also reading biographies of famous people. Later in the year they will have a "Famous People Day" and students will dress up as their favorite famous people. Then they will be interviewed on closed circuit TV by other fourth graders.- Fourth graders are going to have a Science Fair. Boys and girls are writing research papers ' that will be followed with completed projects. Parents will be invited to view the finished projects. Nancy McComb and Jo Ann Pillinger conducted the first Math Lab last Friday in the library. Students came from that first session enthused and excited about math. They are eagerly waiting for the next session. A Book Fair is planned for March. Sharon Nunez and Sandy Southerland are working with a special group of second graders this week on developing their own picture dictionaries. The children are using the words from their reading books and also strengthening strength-ening their alphabetizing skills. Their books are their own creations throughout. They will be displayed in our library during the book fair. February 16 the parent volunteers volun-teers made games and materials to use in the classrooms. The teachers certainly appreciate these parents giving their time. |
