intelli- gence wealth or and-or money if you have the will there will willbe willbe willbe be shown a way BUT LET US not digress This is a story about Lucky no less Discouragement Disappointment Disappoint Disappoint- I ment Helplessness This is what faced Lucky at age six 45 i ey BERT BOYACK I AT TILlS THIS AGE Lucky was told by the family doctor that he had a heart a ailment due to a aleak aleak aleak leak in the left ventricle He was told not to run not to climb stairs not to lift anything heavy and not to worry It seemed that physically he would not lead a normal life This was not to be as you will see The rules were gradually forgotten LUCKY was born Dec 22 1912 He remembers being born on the wrong side of the railroad railroad railroad rail rail- road tracks in poverty His mother reared seven children sometimes in desperation desperation desperation desper desper- but with a great faith in God charity and some kind relatives It was no small chore but with pioneer courage courage courage cour cour- age she was not dissuaded The children to bolster her courage and faith got out and worked as soon as age would permit DUE TO ILL health Lucky spent two years in first grade two years in second grade attending attending attending at at- tending both grades only part partS S II time Surprisingly enough Lucky had not yet been taught to read A very kind neighbor and elementary teacher gave him lessons He was taught to read in a few weeks After that Lucky started reading voraciously anything in school or public library He was weaned on the Horatio Alger Alger Alger Al- Al ger books which always had the same plot rags to riches THE YEARS from the third grade to sophomore in high school were spent comparatively comparative comparative- ly happily Some highlights playing games with many friends in a vacant lot like the broad jump hurdling pole vaulting football kick the can baseball In one summer his nose was broken by a baseball and again by a baseball bat He was also bucked off a horse digging a furrow in the ground with his nose HE liE CAN RECALL his mother being put on the living room table and having all her teeth out without an anesthetic albeit without even an aspirin He remembers in slack seasons seasons seasons sea sea- sons sons spending summers in Salt Lake with cousin Hughes Brockbank and Aunt Jenny and family Hughes' Hughes father Albert Albert Albert Al Al- bert was my mothers mother's brother Hughes would come to Spanish Spanish Spanish Span Span- ish Fork for a vacation then Lucky would spend two or three weeks in Salt Lake THESE WERE wonderful days ANOTHER highlight was being picked up in a tres no passing building that was a fire hazard Lucky walked into the bu building Iding from sheer curiosity He was followed immediately by the city policeman who quickly put handcuffs on him and then said Lets go see seethe seethe seethe the Judge The office of the judge was in the south part of town a distance distance distance dis dis- dis- dis tance of five blocks The handcuffs handcuffs handcuffs hand hand- cuffs did not fit and dropped off So the policeman ordered him to put his hands upright so they would stay on Thus Lucky was patrolled up main street with his arms in the air ail at al 11 am a.m. EMBARRASSED EI Subdued Yes His arms held above his head and his chin almost on his chest he le was so asha ashamed ed The judge said to the policeman police police- man Have that boy lower his arms and take those handcuffs handcuffs handcuffs hand hand- cuffs off The judge God bless him gave a short lecture lecture lecture lec lec- ture and said Try not to gelin get gel in any more trouble The decisive years were to follow whether Lucky was to tomake tomake tomake make something something of his life or go back where he began began- nothing This from 2 Nephi 1023 was read over again and again Therefore clear up your hearts heart and remember remember remember re re- re- re member that ye are free to act for your selves yourself to choose the way of eternal life A ROARING bolt of thunder An instant streak of blinding lightning Suddenly Sudden Sudden- ly awakening from deep sleep Lucky was gasping for air hardly getting but fighting al almost almost almost al- al most vainly to breathe his breathe his heart was beating fast His whole body was trembling shaking in a wreath of sweat He called out faintly Mother mother She came and then the doctor He gave some pills and said He is suffering suffering suffering suf suf- fering a fatal heart attack This was the first the worst of two subsequent attacks Two years was spent bedfast After months in bed the family doctor gave up I II have done all I can He must go to a Salt SaIt Lake hospital hospital hospital hos hos- pital in an ambulance Several Several Several Sev Sev- eral weeks were spent there then back to bed at home LUCKY WAS down to 80 Ibs lbs having lost 40 lbs Ibs His slow convalescence convalescence convalescence con con- was spent reading anything he could get to read After weeks of learning to walk again his mother said Lucky Bert always did more than he should have tried to do Even his family scorned his plans to go back to school but Lucky did every kind of farm work from spreading manure to topping beets He piled hay hayon on top of a high wagon l lifting sacks of grain People said You
