Show New Attitude Toward Public Involvement in Education Suggested By Margie Becker State School Board suggests: sug-gests: A new attitude toward public involvement in education. educa-tion. Last month, 5 5 people representing rep-resenting all possible viewpoints view-points in our diverse community, com-munity, attended the School Board meeting. Is this a trend: are Parkites becoming becom-ing interested in having a direct voice in their schools? In a recent position paper, the Utah State Board of Education Ed-ucation says it believes that "the public has the right and obligation to help shape the functions and destiny of the public schools." Eetailing how the public can get involved, the State Board has listed these points: 1. Boards of education should encourage public attendance at-tendance and participation. 2. School administrations should release information regarding the performance of the schools, so the public can make intelligent decisions. de-cisions. 3. The public should participate par-ticipate in decisions about school needs, goals, how our school money is spent and problems. 4. The burden is on the boards of education, executive ex-ecutive officers and staff to improve communication with the public and to consider public opinion and concerns. 5. School leaders should keep the public well-informed so that they will understand under-stand school needs and the changes required to meet those needs. 6. The schools should systematically sy-stematically and regularly harvest the opinions of all segments of the community, even those who do not ordinarily or-dinarily speak out. 7. School officials and the public should train students to take part in their community com-munity and education decision-making, perhaps through student apprenticeships. apprentice-ships. 8. Colleges should help the schools and the public evaluate eval-uate the schools and come up with suggestions for school needs. On Tuesday, October 21, Carl Jenwen, from the State School Board, will come to Park City to tell us how we can KEEP our public involved. involv-ed. Watch for details!
