Show Ten O'Clock Whistle by David Fleisher After decades and decades of waiting, Park City has finally managed to come up with two very important things: a winning basketball team which finished in second place during a tournament over the weekend, and a new delicatessen which is scheduled to open Friday. The obvious question: which is more important? The answer is equally obvious: both are extremely important. The basketball team has already lifted spirits in town. I predict they have have a winning season and maybe go on to the state championships. The team has a great coach this year and things are definately looking up for the rest of the season. And the other wonderful new addition to Park City is a REAL delicatessen. This place will not just sell liquor, like the other deli in town, but have lox, bagels, cream cheese, salami, and corned beef. Well known local photographer, "Nasty" Nick Nass owns the deli, so it should turn out to be quite good. Besides a Chinese restaurant, the town needs a delicatessen which serves not just liquor, but also food. There should be some way to combine both the deli and the winning basketball team. One suggestion: when you go to the next game, take along a lox and bagel sandwich, or maybe a corned beef on rye. Nothing could be better. Can you imagine watching the Miners win while eating a sandwich from a REAL Park City delicatessen? Beats popcorn anyday. And what about after the game? We should all talk basketball over matzoh ball soup. I don't know if Nick is going to have matzoh ball soup, but he should at least consider it. A delicatessen without matzoh ball soup is like a day without sunshine. Logically speaking, basketball and delicatessens go together. Both can be exciting, as longs as they are both winners. Food and athletics are also biological needs. Spirit and enthusiasm should be encouraged at "all cost in Park City. The key question here is not will I have a corned beef sandwich at the game, but HOW MANY corned beef sandwiches will I have at the game. It's like popcorn. You can't eat just one kernel. Be enthusiastic. Take a risk. You'll probably like it. But the most important thing to remember is this: delicatessens and basketball games go together. It may sound absurd, but you'll never know until you try it for yourself. As I think of points on the board and corned beef on the table, I hear the Ten O'Clock Whistle. |
