Show more than just one or two cars. Traveling at freeway speeds, lulled into sort of a state of hypnosis, mile after mile after mile, all of a sudden the car ahead of you slams on the brakes and rams into a car stalled ahead. You swerve and jam on your brakes but too often, you too, slam into the ready-made accident and before you can collect col-lect your wits, somebody slams into you and another and anoth-er anoth-er and the papers report "a chain reaction accident involving involv-ing 10, 15 or as many as 50 cars." It's easy driving on superhighwaysthe super-highwaysthe roads are wide, there are many lanes, one way traffic; the view is good in all directions-and so, what happens? hap-pens? We tend to forget we are in control of a lethal weapon-tons weapon-tons of steel and glass-and we let our minds wander. At those speeds a couple of seconds can make that difference I spoke of. Another bugaboo on superhighways super-highways is the problem of getting on and getting off-and just as important, lettingothers get on and off. Highways are well marked todayexits to-dayexits coming up are identified identi-fied a mile or two in advance. It always says Exit-use right hand lane" -but it doesn't tell you to use a lefthand lane to allow oncoming drivers to get onto the highway. If you should be daydreaming day-dreaming and there, all of a sudden, is your EXIT for heaven's sake, don't veer to the right in front of traffic and zoom off. If you can make the lane switch fine, but if you can't take that extra time to go to the next Exit and then double back. It'll be worth your time, believe be-lieve me. It may just make that difference! Bits and Pieces By Eleanor Bennett Some highways are called ' super-nothing to do but steer the car; cars are made to go faster-nothing to do but steer! Is that true? If you would only realize what there E to do when you drive these super-highways! It is little things that can make the BIG differences the difference, perhaps, between fun and disappointment, between being early and being late, yes, even the difference between life and death! For years we've been told that highway driving is different-you different-you bet it is! You might think, as I once did, that the main peril on super highways is speeding, it'sNOT. These roads hold very special traps for unwary drivers. About the worst is the rear-end collision col-lision that is apt to involve many |
