Show Now that the motorcycle has come back into its own I still don't mind so much. In fact, I have learned to un-love motorcycles motor-cycles more and more. (OUR CORNER is alive with motorcycle riders. They roar past at all hours, and they wait until they're right in front to kick in the roar ingest gear. BUT -they are there in greatest numbers and loudest roars when we're trying to complete a longdistance long-distance call.) But for once, and finally, we owe the bikes an apology. Monday night, just as we were going to sleep, the night lights went out. All over the neighborhood. neighbor-hood. MY LADY FAIR Louise; the' moment it gets dark, sees monsters mon-sters with three fangs coming in the window; rats coming out of the floor-boards; bats coming com-ing out of the ceiling; thieves digging up her tomato cans loaded load-ed with old bills and confederate con-federate money in the lawn. She got up and lit the kerosene kero-sene lamp by which I learned to read. We tried to go back to sleep. Pretty soon there were voices in the back yard, and I restrained re-strained her from blunder-bussing the tomato can-thieves. They wore hard hats, and they were very busy. Pretty soon the lights came on-but not until -two huge motorcycles roared busy-busy-roary-bangy around the house. NEXT MORNING we learned the truth. Next door, behind the Ron and Ann Porter home, a tree had blown down across the light line. The city boys, led by Dennis Woolsey, were right on HEY, HOW ABOUT those football teams in the area? Look what happens: The South Summit Wildcats beat Wasatch-all 80 of 'em. Meanwhile, North Summit beat the AA team from Grantsville. So last week Wasatch splits the team down the middle and sends 40 men to North Summit and 40 men to Park City. Both teams get beat. And South repeats. re-peats. DIXIE at St. George sends a monstrous team up to Morgan and gets beaten and especially outfought, 2 to 0. And last week Morgan goes up to AAA Bear River and outplays them until the last two minutes, only to go down 15 to 14. Who says all the good football is played in the big towns. Who? There will be a real test this week end when the North Summit Braves meet the Morgan Trojans at Coalville. They're no longer in the same league, but there you'll see a real test of shin-kickin', gut-bitin', head-huntin' sport just like old times. AFTER ALL these years of all kinds of activity, some good, some bad, some medium, there's still one simple thing I've never done: I've never ridden a motorcycle. motor-cycle. Not on the driver's seat, not on the bars, not on the rear seat, not even in a side-car. I'm not a-sceart it just happens. hap-pens. Once I got in a side-car to ride to town and the driver discovered he had a flat tire. That's as far as I ever got. the job and removed the tree and patched the line andMLF (and I) could sleep in peace again. "But whyinell didja need the motorcycle?" "That was no motorcycle, Mac. That was a power cutter." For which I beg, most humbly, their pardon. Morgan's city crew is really on the job. Mac. |
