| Show DEATH OF CLERGYMAN IS MYSTERY woman and young man who saw him die have disappeared los angeles cal feb 5 the death of rov C E bentley of lincoln neb in a lodging house at no south los angeles street last night has furnished a case somewhat puzzling to the police rev bentley according to a story told by mrs douglass proprietress of the lodging house which ils located in tho section known as the east side lodging house district applied for a room about 8 saturday night he was accompanied by a stylishly dressed who a thick black veil tho landlady them to a room and while she was on the light bentley dropped to the floor unconscious the woman who accompanied him told the landlady to go for water which she did when she returned a moment later the mysterious woman had disappeared mrs douglass then went to seek assistance but returning a few moments later found a young man by alic name of haynes a lodger holding bentleys head he left saying he was going for a doctor but has not been seen since mrs douglass finally summoned the police but bentley as dead the body was removed to the morgue lato saturday night and was not identified until today when searched it was found eliat his gold watched vaa missing and that his pockets contained only a dollar and five cents in cash an autopsy was held today and it was found that death was due to heart disease the police arc seeking who accompanied bentley and while they do not she Is in any way responsible for his death they would like to learn who she Is and why sho as in bentleys company rev bentey and his wife arrived in los angeles baat friday and took apartments at street alev bendey was a candidate for the presidency on the prohibition ticket in the campaign 0 1896 and three times the prohibition candidate for united states senator from nebraska he was 61 years old lincoln neb 5 rev C E bentley was for many years a resident of nebraska he began his ministerial work in nebraska and for 25 years was pastor of one church at surprise he leaves a wife and six grown children he left lincoln for the west jan 13 the body will bo brought to lincoln for burial |
