| Show THE HARRIMAN CLARK DEAL MEANS MUCH TO THIS CITY 1 AND ITS RAILROAD FUTURE makes gogoen th junction of another road to the coast and means that this city may get the general offices of the short line probable extension of the rio grande western from this point new territory will be opened to ogden jobbers As forecast in the standard for bome weeks agdens importance as a railroad center has been greatly increased by a deal made by the interests and senator dark by which the latter comes into possession of all of the oregon short line south of lake and obtains a 09 year lease on the terminals in that city chark will at once build to los angeles this deal means that dark and liar riman have entered into y combination to head off the gould interests in getting another trans continental line to the coast the Harri system will simp ly obtain another outlet to the coast for some time dark lias been acting for harriman and purchased for the latter the franchises for the 75 mile territory for street car lines about log angeles the deal mean that all the krainc on the dark road from the coast will pass through ogdan to the east over the union pacific and that ogden will be the junction point for another transcontinental line it means that with the 0 S L and 0 E X to the sound country the southern pacific to sail francisco and the dark road to los angeles with the sunset route in direct competition with the santa fe on the south harriman is virtually the master of the overland transcontinental situation and can practically name conditions to the other corporations there is no doubt that the gould interests will now rush to the coast their long projected line that is now in course of construction from farnham in central utah via cedar city will be extended to the coast and there is every probability that the exigencies of the situation will force the long contemplated extension of their line from ogden to the coast but whether they leavo connection with the projected beckwith pass railroad headed this way from california or with the coos bay route remains to be seen all of this makes the outlook in the railroad situation most roseate for ogden As elated in the standard sometime ago when the lease of the terminals in salt lake to senator chark ana first contemplated the lease includes tha lease on the general offices of the short line in the deseret bews yews building and the general of the line are to be removed at that time it was thought that they would be removed to portland but now there ia every probability that they will be removed to ogden this city has Ix conie the veritable center of the great harriman systems and the junction of all the various line thia is the logical location for the headquarters of the short line for here all its traffic connections with the east are made A wise and energetic campaign on the part of the commercial bodies of the city would no doubt leouie these offices for chii city for some time past the compare has been enlarging and improving the dispatchers offices here aal it is a foregone conclusion that the general dispatchers offices of the line will come here anyway but it seems that it is only a matter of work on the part of the ogden business men to secure the general offices also with the terminals ter in salt lake goci the repair shop of the line there and this means either the immediate commencement of work on the contemplated large general shops of the harriman system here or the enlargement of alie union pacific repair shops here where the oregon short line work can be done there i no doubt that the deal is for the best interest of ogden for while salt lake ia at last made a way station on a transcontinental line tin s city is made the junction of a third line to tha coast with the every probability of securing the general offices of one of the lines and a probability of the extension of the rio orande from this city to coni hect with the beckwith pass road under the present between harriman and dark the san padro los ra 4 ellke d purchases n i miles of railroad with all the equipment necessary to run it this is as follows s salt lake trains the ewt equipment can eniy f thi will be rolling over the entire length of the main line between and loa angeles und sau bedio harbor 1 l he development of the iron and coal ol 01 alic state will be the most important of the bedl but there abc thousands of other ways in which tho prosperity of altal i savada and california will uc increase manifold the ogdan and manufacturers will have a a broad strip of tani tory neaily or all the way to the sea from utah will how the products of alic mines the ranches and the factories from california will come the freiti and other products of the soil peculiar to that area and such merchandise as may come by sea for alie interior the ranchers and Bt oilmen of county am c better rail connection than thiea ever enjoyed before stockton and ophir will have direct railroad connection for the output of their silver lead mines there h iron in skull valley and mineral of other kinds all through that region firo clay for bricks and building stone of various kinds are found near the line silica sand in skull valley offers excellent opportunities for the manufacture of glass coal has been found in the cedar mountains but is not sufficiently developed to show its extent within easy distance for a branch line is the great deep creek region A desert intervenes and the lack of railroad transportation lias greatly retarded the development of a district of wonderful promise for twenty years a hoodoo seems to have hung over railroad building to this rich mineral area conff enterprise after another has been abandoned through financial reverses of borne kind general or special until the superstitious have almost come to a belief that fate will always keep a railroad away but it h only a question of time when a branch will be built miles or thereabouts to tho heart of this region mines will be reached in only sc comparatively chort distance at the dugway district the four act als has proved up a great body of silver lead ore while there are a number of promising copper gold and silver lead prospects A littan farther west is the fish springs district where high grade silver lead ore has been opened to a depth of over feet in ho utah mine the deep creek district itself at the western extremity of the state is a vast arca in which silver lead copper and gold have been opened up in quantities which would pay handsomely if a railroad were built there it is believed to be only a question of time when a branch will be constructed to give these pus mines access to the markets farther to the south on the main line are the mines of west gintic tintic which are given closer rail communication still farther benth are the vast copper gold silver and lead mines of beaver county now being developed on a magnificent ent scale with the construction of reservoirs to save the spring freshets fresh ets and the drilling of artesian wells a large stretch of country through here may become valuable for agricultural purposes the mining campa furnishing a ready market the mineral of southern kc badt are less extensive but they may be increased by reservoirs reser voird and artesian wells the use of the subterranean flow is at present practically nothing the development of a market in the mining camps will naturally turn the attention to increasing the supply in this method and the po are hard to estimate the last three years water sufficient to irrigate acrea of laud has been developed by artesian wells in bouthern california even a tithe of this amount would mean a great deal to i devala Xe vala for the lack of water is the greatest drawback to the development of agriculture there |
