freight bureau meeting set for tuesday at salt lake has been call edoff it is probable that the meeting will take place in kansas city on that date as many of the general freight agents are now attending conferences jn that city and omaha nearly a million and a half acres of land situated in wyoming colorado nebraska utah and kansas have been sold by the union P alclo railroad during the fiscal year just closed these are greater than any previous sales most of the land was purchased in large tracts by ehe epand cattle growers charles andrews formerly postmaster at nepal but now a wool dealer of salt lake went through ogden today to boano toano where be will load five cars of wool he says movements in wool owing to a disposition among sheep owners to hold their wool until after election feeling confident of an increase of several points in the price the soldiers ordered to service in china will probably pass through ogden and it they go west by the southern pacific which Is within the range of possibilities twenty trains will be required for their transportation the one of which will leave ogden during the coming the transportation of these soldiers and their baggage means a greatly increased traffic over the roads entering here reports from the nevada towns along the southern pacific are to the effect that all celebrated the fourth of july most patriotically and tl cally in fact the enthusiasm was unlimited but the citizens were handicapped in obtaining an agency through which to express it for the merchants had failed to secure a sufficient stock of bunting flags and firecrackers this shortage of all paramount necessities in the proper celebration of our coun arys natal day waa especially felt at wadsworth where the fireworks and other adjuncts conducive of the small boys happiness gave out early in the day at winnemucca a game of ball was played which resulted in a victory for the home team over the wadsworth team W H young and wife of ca nev who were here arranging to take tho body of mrs youngs brother jamea P wheeler tha southern pacific brakeman who died at the hospital back to nevada went down to salt lake last evening they returned at midnight and accompanied the body west on no C at this morning the funeral services will take place at virginia city tomorrow and the interment will be at silver city the death mrs young deeply both on account of the sudden and shocking details of tho accident and because he was the only relative remaining of her immediate family ho was formerly a miner belonging to the miners union of virginia city and ho had only made two trips on the road as brakeman mr young Is cm aloyed as brakeman from wadsworth to cariln tho action of the southern pacific officials in removing the big steam shovel and tho major portion of the road workers from the west end to the east end ot the road 13 construed by those in close with the road to moan that work on the great salt lake cutoff cut off will be commenced in the near future at present the force is employed in ballasting the east end of the line eliminating grades where possible and reducing them in other instances it is thought however that as soon as this work Is finished active operations will te begun on the cutoff and the line will be laid as far as the promontory point whether or not the proposed resort will be established yet Is wholly a matter of conjecture as the present policy of the road seems to be to deal principally with perfecting its roadbed and thus save time through reduction of grades and by cutting out curves that the resort will be a feature offered to the patrons of the southern pacific in the very near future may depend upon the action of a company especially incorporated for that purpose as hinted at by some who claim to be on the inside concerning the operations THAT LOS ANGELES ROAD every time any movement Is made by either the santa fe or los angeles roads speculation becomes rite with a few papers in this section concerning an extension of one of these systems from some point along their arizona or california routes to connect with the utah pacific or with the rio grande at cedar city these theories are based upon interviews or statements from C P huntington or santa fe authorities that a road would come through making connection from los angeles to salt lake city the nevada people who live along the line of the southern pacific route seem to be in closer touch with the policy of that road and the consensus of ron expressed by prominent nevada citizens who visit daden is that there will be a connecting line but it will be by way of the carson colorado with an extension from keelar the terminus of that branch to mojave a distance of about miles when this line was first purchased the san francisco papers had long articles stating that t his was the policy to be pursued by the road and the years operations would seem to lend color to the statement the main line has been well ballast ed its entire length new steel has been laid in some places and the numerous cutoffs cut offs completed and projected the haul by many hours in this connection lit may be observed that san francisco papers in speaking of a salt lake los angeles road take it for granted that it will be consummated through an extension of one of the two utah roads building in that direction but it is almost certain that in event of either road beginning active operations with ahat en d in view the southern pacific would rush the kobler mojave extension and present a more direct and shorter route by way of the C and C and C P io ogden C P huntington has positively stated that the southern pacific would not build into salt lake as the oregon short line and rio branue western at present cover the distance to the satisfaction of all roads concerned the santa fe authorities by their present operations in extending into san Francl fco and making combinations with eastern roads tor a through service to new york have given practically ti notice that their attention Is to be given to perfecting a areat overland route it the salt lake people want a connecting road to los angeles they must look to the utah roads for it and tb e Is very hazy as neither road will care to take tho burden of a mile extension in the face of the formidable opposition presented by the southern pacific through th carson colorado branch |
